Default 2GS, Nakamichi, 2 antenna plugs?

Looking to swap out the stereo in the 2GS, noticed on the back of the Nak it has 2 plugs that appear to be antenna plugs. Do I need to use both for antenna to work on an aftermarket, and will I need an adapter to fit it? (they both look smaller than the usual plug I am familiar with on other cars)

No, you don't need to use both. The car uses a diversity antenna system to get the clearest signal possible for radio (it compares the two and switches between them). You will need an OEM to Motorola adapter to make it work with most new radios, but will only use one of the plugs. I would compare the signal strength between them before buttoning it up. One may have a higher resistance on it to reject noise better.

Apparently there are tons of adapters for this. Would this be the right one?

I don't think so. What year is your GS? Do you have a picture of the plugs you have?

It's a 98 GS400 w/ Nakamichi stereo. Since I was back there I played around a bit.
  • The bigger plug does fit in the BoomzBox HD receiver input. Don't have anything wired for this yet though so couldn't test output to my CarPC to know if it is receiving.
  • The bigger plug on its own does give radio reception to the Nakamichi.
  • The smaller plug did not seem to affect the radio whether plugged in or not to the Nak.

I suppose until I get the BoomzBox powered on and tested, my only question now is.. wtf is that smaller plug for?!

The back of the Nak:

The plugs for the BoomzBox:

What the plugs look like:

Okay, so they got smart and made one of the plugs Motorola sized. That's very nice. The car did have a diversity antenna system, so the Nak was comparing the two. Since the new one doesn't need it, you're golden. My bad - really thought there would be an adapter needed, but hey, better to be wrong and have it be free, right?

Strange how big corps like to screw with industry standards just to make things difficult, but it's nice when they work with it instead. The smaller plug when plugged in on its own provided NO reception for the radio, so I really have no idea what it was for.. If it was true diversity, you would think either one would be providing signal.

thanks a lot for your input, I will be wiring this up in the next couple weeks so hopefully things go smoothly!

I wonder if you can reuse the duel antenna on the after market (retrofit it).... I have terrible reception on my after market unit. The small one ..if I recall correctly, is the power antenna.

I don't know what it's all about either. I asked the same question a year ago...not a new thread though.
