Did the car come with a factory changer or did you add one? It sounds like your factory HU doesn't control a CD changer if you don't have a CD button on it.
If you added a factory changer, you're options are probably to find a HU from a car that was equipped with a changer, or hope you can get a FM modulator for the changer. FM modulation makes the changer come through a radio frequency, less than ideal but it works. If you pursue this option, check with Pioneer to see if there is something that would work with the changer you've got.
Just re-read your post, do you have an FM modulated changer with a little controller that you mount somewhere? If so, look for the radio frequency that it's sending out. Hopefully the install isn't more complicated than that, like setting a frequency or something. (I've never installed a changer with the FM mod.)
If you're still having trouble, I'd try to call or e-mail Pioneer tech support and describe your problem.
