The infinite baffle sub does not work in a 'free air' situation. The Qts is too low. I wonder whether these guys know what they are doing.

I've checked out the specs of free air subs from Dynaudio, Focal, JL and Vifa. They all compute. These don't. Their other products might be OK, but their free air sub won't work.

Not quite. Free air is something of a misnomer. It is generally understood to refer to a woofer that will function on a rear shelf loaded by the trunk.

In practice it means a woofer that is comfortable working in a sealed volume of 200 - 400 litres. That's not really free air, but it's the way that the term is used.

Upon reflection, I think you're right. Both of these terms seem to be synonymous in the car audio business.

Actually free-air means that there is no barrier between front and back waves. If your sub is hanging on a string and you play it, that's free-air. There are no such situations in car audio but many assume that free-air is anything withought a box.
IB is another case. That is where the front of the sub is separated fromt he back of the sub with a baffle. That is our classical rear deck application.

Check my install. That thing is IB.

I think that Infinite baffle and free air have merged into the same in car audio. The reason IMO is that retailers sell subs as "Free air" but as Retro said it is impossible to have a true free air setup in car audio. It seems like it would be easier to sell and describe an infinite baffle setup to beginners as "free air". Maybe thats what creates the misunderstandings?

I have never heard DLS in person, but I have heard good things about them. They are fairly popular in Europe I believe, but I dont think they have been in the states very long.

I didnt look at all the specs on the website, maybe you could narrow it down to which seperates you are interested in? The sub looks like it would do well in SQ, but kind of weak in SPL(Foam w/Paper cone, 9 mm excursion, 360w peak). Another CL member who competes was talking about these, but I forget who, do a search.

Default DLS Speakers

Here is a link to a great show-winning car in Europe using DLS speakers, cables, and amps:

http://w1.501.telia.com/~u50103051/eng_index2.html

They also have a US web site: www.dls-america.com

Phil Petracca, an IASCA competitor (and SQ judge, too, I think) is running them in his competition car. A lot of the top IASCA judges say his car sounds amazing. You can find him over on the Carsound.com forum as "PhilthyPhil". I believe he is also a distributor but not sure. Hope this helps.

Default DLS and Philthy

Well, I have the insider information on this one.

Philthy is a very good friend of mine (10+ years). I also happen to be his attorney for business purposes. He is the rep for DLS. His Mercedes Benz (world champion IASCA 301-600 amateur ultimate) is a Dynaudio/Zapco/Image Dynamics car built by Sounds Impossible (Impossible Bill Acevedo/Omar Buker) (more very good friends of mine). We all met from competing in IASCA back in the early 1990's (well before I became an attorney)

Phil's Jetta is the DLS car - speakers and amplifiers. Last weekend the car got caught in a flash flood and he now needs a periscope to operate the vehicle. He soaked it before I got to hear it but I am sure it sounded very nice from the feedback I got from trusted individuals The car needs a new motor etc and insurance co is rebuilding it. Ths install looked great (especially for a "street" car)

As for DLS - Phil's got the scoop. My GS is going in this weekend for full install - Pioneer P9, Zapco amplifiers, DLS speakers and Image Dynamic subs, when I get the car back in a couple of weeks, I'll let you know how it worked out.

If you need info on DLS, call 732 291 8808 Sounds Impossible or 908 624 1992 Phil's rep firm.
