I want to replace my stock 10 with a 12" free air sub. Need recommendations on subs, amps, and speakers for front/rear, for a 99 GS4. I just might have the $$ for a nice little setup.

replace your factory speakers with new 4" infinity and took you factory sub out. Install two 10" Bazookas in the trunk for bass and you need the amps one for bass and one for mid (punch 300s and punch 150s). These amps build in crossover so you don't have to spend any money for anything else.

You'll have a perfect sound in your car with out caring alot of weight in the trunk.

Speaking from personal experience
Speakers:
Dynaudio system 240MkII (expensive but you can't go wrong)
Focals Utopias are pretty good...heard them on friend's car..also pretty expensive

Amps:
Mcintosh (dreadfully expensive now...used to be "only" very expensive)
Precision Power
Arc Audio
Xtant

Subs:
Image Dynamics
JL Audio W6 series ...never heard of W7s...but they're expensive as well

Word of advise...if the dyns or focals or other high end speakers are not within your price range ...consider only putting in the front speakers...you really don't need the rear....if I DO have rear speaker..i'd attenuate them as much as possible....but honestly...you can live without them if you don't have passengers in the rear all the time....

for a free-air sub in the back, I'd would go with an ImageDynamics IDQ-12 or if you have the $$ an IDMAX 12. Both are efficent woofers and will run well with moderate power...~300 watts. The JL10W6 will not run in free-air and will need a box. I currently have a 10W6 in a box hanging from the rear deck. It sounds nice, but I don't like how the box looks. I think I'm going to change it out for one of the ImageDynamics subs i mentioned above.

as for main speakers, I agree with amlin423. I'm running Dyn's in the front and stock rears which I use mainly for fill. Even when I have passengers in the back, I can play with the fader to give them more volume to hear the music in the back.

jawnthen,
I wanted to mount my box on the rear deck like you but couldn't do it because of the trunk bars. I want a free air sub so it'll look cleaner and also so then I can actually show off my mcintosh amp through the plexiglass to my friends..

Since I can't go the 12inch route on the rear deck because the bars get in the way..i can only live with a 10 inch sub as free air. Im dying to hear when the idmax10 will come out..another thing
is that the idmax12 is too darn heavy..I've talked to enginyr thru PM and he says it's around 28 lbs...it would really suck if that thing rips off the rear deck while I go through turns at high speeds...tend to do that more now ever since i got my sways and teins...

amlin413,

what trunk bars are you talking about? is it the rear STB? I have the toms rear STB and my box clears, but I still like the look of seeing the woofer magnet instead of a box.

I'm waiting on the IDMAX 10 also, but even when it comes out, I think it will need to be seriously mounted to the rear deck. I'm thinking of rebuilding the whole rear deck out of MDF and attaching it to the metal from the topside. Then when i thought about going that route, I might as well step up to a 12.

well that's my winter project...we'll see how it goes.

which 10" did you go with btw?

Nope..not the rear STB..i don't have those...if you look under your rear deck in the trunk...you'll see the bars that go across the trunk...I'm not sure what those are called..but the bars support the trunk when it's opened...

I am using a 12 inch sub in a box now. The brand is Phase Linear...i got it from ampman.com but they don't carry it anymore so it's almost impossible to find in the US now....The box is sitting on the ledge but the problem with that is that I cant fit my luggage in there.

Amlin, they get all the parts in mid december and start building the 10's. I am not sure how hard it would be to get one from the first production batch but possible. I'll PM you when they are out.

"Q" on the IDQ looks too low to work freeair. Look into Elemental Designs E10K.
