Is Carista software compatible and functions the same with iPhone 4,5 or Mac Book as it does with Androids? Also what extra accessories are needed to work on a Mac laptop pc?
I've been occasionally getting CEL codes from a loose gas cap and can't stand waiting at the dealership for hours just to clear it.

To answer your questions: Carista is available for iPhone 4S or newer, iPad 3 or newer (running iOS 8 or newer) and Android 2.3 or newer. It is NOT available for computers/laptops like MacBooks. The extra hardware you need is an OBD adapter (as you've found out), and we recommend our official Carista OBD adapter: http://www.caristaapp.com/#hardware
Yes, it also works on BMWs and Minis, but our advanced support (customizations and advanced diagnostics) is only available on BMW E-models since around 03/2007. We don't support advanced features for BMW F-models yet (which are BMW's latest models), but we're working on it.
Any chance of getting another group buy or bundle deal going? Looking into getting this but the cost of the adapter is a bit much especially since the competition can run 10-20.
Does anyone know any Android alternatives to Carista, bc this is just insanely expensive compared to what it was.
I was wondering the same thing. I like that its an OBD2 scanner as a I'm looking to buy a used IS soon but mainly I want to be able to change my LPS at will on my 2017 RX 350. But what they are charging seems to be a bit much for limited use.

Receiving an error message from Carista app stating reader is "bad" although it seems to meet the requirements set for by Carista (version on this reader is 1.5). Am I missing something?
2. For a 2014 Lexus GS350 does Carista offer the option to change the operation of the side mirrors (fold when ignition turned off, car put in park, etc)?
I have no idea about the specific adapter you purchased. However, I had a generic ELM327 v1.4 which showed bad as well. It worked with other software (like Torque) but not with Carista. It seems that several Chinese adapters are sold as ELM327 v1.4 (or better) but are in fact the older version which is not compatible with Carista.
I could not get mine to work and I bought the Carista one. I am sure there are good generic ones, cheaper that Carista, but you have to make sure it works with Carista before ordering it (reviews from other people using it successfully) as you cannot trust the specs that come with the Chinese cheap adapters... Same thing happens with Chinese rechargeable batteries, most of the time the listed capacity in the specs is over rated (I.e.: a 1500mA may in fact only be 1000 or 1200mA)...
