10" subwoofer in 8" hole?

I'm no audio installer so hopefully others will chime in.

I think the reason I'm confused and made this thread is because of this post
How did his 10" sub fit perfectly when his stock sub was 8"?
i have a 95 sc400 with the pioneer system and my stock subwoofer is 8inch. im in the process of replacing it with a 500watt JL audio 10w3v3-2 and it fits perfectly in the opening...except for it hitting the gas tank. Im doing what others did and re-using the black O-ring but it still needs to be put up another inch. Also i was at a buds sound shop and they recommended making a box around the gas tank and filling it with poly because it is free air. Im up for the challange and ill see if the box really helps.

The listed cutout size required for that JL sub is 9" so unless the soarer and sc are different in cut out size I don't see how it would if you measured 8" diameter cutout. If you can't modify the opening gonna be stuck with finding a sub with an 8" mount hole. I could have sworn mine was 10" but it's been years since I ripped my stock stuff out and I just covered the whole. That does make me remember there was a plastic trim rim ring of sorts that was fairly tall. I remember cutting it up to make a better seal. Might have had provisions to get a larger sub mounted in it. Maybe someone has their interior out and can snap a pic.

I have a 90 LS400 and it came with an 8" sub stock. It has been blown since I bought the car in 2011. I'm going to install a 10" JL audio sub in its place. I am going to try just taking a 10" MDF ring to space it up an inch and size it up to 10".
