Purpose: Putting a OEM navigation system into a non non-nav GS

-finished built the wiring harness
-Video signal look good from 25cent/foot cable
-nav hard drive is not working, the guy who sell me this hard drive better give me some money back.


it would be great if someone with with an old nav hard drive let me borrow it... I am pretty sure i can clone this drive to another drive. I will get the latest nav update from lexus when I verify that everything is working.

AC control is working fine. Touch screen, yum
Radio is not working yet. maybe that radio is bad, but who care, hee, my next project is to replace that radio with a dvd player anyway. Hopefully I will figure out how to modify the dvd player to play directly to this screen w/o going to that Piooner Tuner, hmm rgb, how do i get rgb out of the dvd decoder chip hmm hmm

I had wired up the whole stock NAV unit so it's self contained, just need power and cut 1 wire from the factory wiring to power and run the NAV, everything else is plug and play.

And the wiring only cost me under $15 hee hee

The screen is from a GS, 98-00 (LS screen has some more stuff on it, and the wiring is bit different) I think the 01-02 screen should work also.

nav computer is from an LS, but the nav computer is the same on GS or LS anyway, just the screen is different.


The wiring is pretty straight forward, I did it in a couple hours, I have to do this again, i probably can do it in less time. I probably do a full write up soon. I took a bunch of pictures and draw a few wiring diagram for this. for now, I still need locate a working nav hard drive to finish my testing and find some free time to mount the computer, and put the wiring in the car.

If you want the dealer to do all this(just the screen and Nav ECU) it will set you over $10K. I mean just to converse from a non-nav car to nav with all new factory units.
Unless you can find a used screen and a used ECU( if you're lucky) and spend sometime on this project. Then you may have to deal with some stuff that doesn't work( like Banana said on the first post) and a lot more headache in the future. I think it may be easier to find another GS with factory nav. IMO.

Cost mucho at the dealer, most of them won't even dream about it, dealers are not in the business of making their own cable. They may able to order new harness, but factory wiring is packed in such away, that it connect to many component other than the nav.

But building the cable is the easiest thing, at least for me. If you really wanted it, there is a will there a way. I got all of my parts for under $800 within 2 weeks from the monent I started looking.

They guy who sole me the nav computer and HD still have a 98LS screen/radio, 2 screens from IS300. He is sending me another hard drive to try out.
I paid $5 for an online part locator to search all the part around the US for me, I get several response within 2 days, most of them come with warranty. My part cames in original toyota box for the navigation with full instruction, i wonder how he got them.

My dealer told me that if my nav computer is not working, they will swap it out for me, I had to pay some money, but don't know how much, at least not $5K, so far, my nav computer work fine.

Anyone ever gone the other way? NAV to no-NAV setup? Is it possible?

I am kind of sick of the incessant button pushing to do anything, and wonder if it's possible???

You pay me $3500 and you have your non-NAV controls installed in my 2000 GS400 by a reputable shop so all my A/C, radio, etc. works... and you get my NAV unit!

I have searched and searched and can't seem to find any salvaged Lexus's. The newest one I found was a '94 thanks anyway though.

Keep me updated on this BananaGS. I am VERY interested in installing a Nav in my GS3. Please do a full write up on the wiring and everything that you had to do (references, websites, the whole 9 yards) if you don't mind. Keep us updated!!
