after market sound system possible with lexus nav system
I was at an audio store the other day pricing out some stuff for my 98 gs400. As i was asking question the salesman asked if i had the nav unit. he told me that if the nav unit does not have pre amp out puts then i would have to gut my whole system. Is this true????

not the whole system but the shop (better be a good one) has to hack into your signal wire with line converter that will make preamp outputs on your nav/cd/tape/radio/whatever.

You might not be able to do this anyways. If I remember correctly there are two pairs of signal wire. One l/r pair for radio/tape and the other l/r pair is for the cd. Unless he has some sort of switcher it's not going to work out right.

Go to a different stereo shop, the one your dealing with doesnt know what they are talking about. Obviously your not trying to change out the headunit since you have nav, so I assume your pricing out amps, subs, and or speakers? I have a 98 GS4 with nav as well, I added 3 amps, a sub, and new speakers off the factory head unit. You can add PAC adapters at the factory amp to add on aftermarket amps, from there its just what you want to add(ie. speakers/subs).
My best advice is if you go to a stereo shop that doesnt seem to know exactly how to install a system on a GS with nav, then dont let them do it. Try to find a shop that has experience with this exact system, you might have to go to a high end shop with experience with custom jobs.
Good luck!

Girvan,
Do you have the full internal schematics for these?
