I was driving home from work and listening to a cd when the stereo turned itself off. I turned it back on and the cd was playing but the fm was being displayed. I switched to the second set of fm stations and got the stations back. I tried playing the cd again but the stereo would not switch to the cd changer. We changed cartridges with no effect. When we got home, we went upstairs to eat dinner, and I came back to the car a half hour later and the cd worked. Besides having a display that sometimes is missing part of a digit, it's been playing.

Any ideas why my stereo would just turn itself off? The volume wasn't high and the stereo wasn't on for more then 1/2 hour.

i've had that happen to me twice in 1 year. i wouldn't worry about it. most likely the stereo circuitty probably got locked up in a mode that just needed a reset (digital stuff, hehe). so after u turn the power off, it clears its previous state and works again. no problems.
