Question Best place to put alarm LED

Hey everyone,

I'm a new member as well as a new Lexus owner. I have a '91 ls400 and recently had my alarm/keyless entry installed (factory keyless is broken, plus 3ft. range sucks!), but when it was installed I wasn't sure where to put the alarm LED. Does anyone have any ideas on the best place to put it? This may sound like a simple question, but I really would just like to know what others have done.

Also, what do you guys think, bright white LED or bright blue? I want to get away from the standard red one and thought white or blue would look cool.

Here's what I was thinking, either put the LED under my deck in the mounting kit, or put it to the left of the factory keyless entry on/off switch. I'll attach a pic of my center so you can see what I mean.

blue LED, what is the reason for putting in the LED? if for the thieves to see that you have alarm, then put it where they can see it. if it for show, then put it where ever you like. Personally, putting it close to the stereo plate is not a good idea, just draw more attention to what you have install there.

I would mount it on top of the steering column, at night it should reflect off the cluster, producing more reflections.

Thanks for the input guys. I forgot to mention a couple of things though. My factory alarm light does not work. Also, I originally asked my installer to try to wire my aftermarket alarm LED wires to the factory security light ones, so the factory security light functioned for both alarms, but he said he tried and it didn't work. Basically I want the LED in there just to show I have a working alarm and also so I know the thing is armed.

I like the steering column idea, that might work nicely!

you can just replace the light inside the factory alarm light with an LED, connect it to your aftermarket alarm, then you have an OEM look with a cool LED

Thumbs up

Good call BananaGS,
I may even try doing that tomorrow if I'm able to pick up a LED at radio shack tonight. In order to access the factory security light, do I only need to remove the 3 or 4 screws at the top of the instrument cluster?

You might want to contact Rockero as well...

He seems to be doing quite a bit of this, perhaps he can provide you with info/services/LED's...

Although mine is an SC, this is where i chose to mount the Clifford LED and valet code buttons. I think this is a good place to mount it, you can see the flashing light from all the windows and the windshield. So, maybe there's a place in your car similar to this, and it wouldn't look too out of place.

Thanks for that DIY BananaGS, I really do appreciate your help, but unfortunately my factory security light is behind the black trim panel so replacement is going to be a little different. I tried taking the thing apart today, but couldn't figure out how to get that black trim off without breaking it. Unless I can find, or someone has detailed instructions on how to do this I may wait until my garage isn't all wet and things warm up (it's cold in MN!). I know that taking the trim off is probably pretty easy, but I want to be careful, that piece looks very delicate.

Oh yeah, my factory security light started working after I replaced a defective courtesy light switch on my passenger side! Also, I picked up a bright white LED the other day. I'll be ready to tackle this project once I figure out that trim removal.

Richard,
That looks like a good location for your car, in fact, it almost looks factory! The only place I could mount mine in the center would be in my deck kit, and I think that would look really out of place in my car.
