Need more bass, but not enough info...
I've got a stock stereo on my 99 GS400 and want to just replce the sub for more bass. Where is the sub located, and could I just swap it with an MB Quart (for example) and use the stock amp, or get an extra amp to power that sub mono from the signal? I can't seem to find a diagram outlining the specs/layout of the stock stereo system of the GS after lots of searching...I don't want to spend more than $800 for this upgrade. Thanks...

The stock sub is a 10" and mounted to the rear deck. You can remove it and put in a free air sub. I bought a Pioneer TS-W254F (250w RMS) on ebay for ~$50. You will need to fashion something to mount it, like a baffle plate or something (which is my current problem).

I've done it too
I followed Copout's details pretty much to the "T" and installed the exact same components. There is a night & day difference in the bass output. Not "pounding" like a box with multiple subs, but full, and defined and loud. I can feel a decent thump on some songs with strong bass.
FWIW, after I installed the JL 10IB4 sub, I tried it out before the amp install, and it sounded the same as stock . It was after the Kicker 400.1 that it came alive. But then , a decent quality sub needs power to operate / hit correctly, and the stock amp just doesn't cut it.
Also, removing the rear seat and side curtains etc. to get to the rear deck was at first intimidating, but after doing it, (took about 40 minutes ) I could easily do it again in 20 minutes without a problem. I used a 3/8 inch piece of hardwood from Lowes to make the spacer/template for the sub.
All in all, I'm very satisfied with the results. Cheers.

I'm also very impressed with the installation, and feel that it's really the best way to go while keeping a "stock" look. My only question is: Do you think that's the best speaker/amp combination for premium sound? I don't think I'd be impressed with only 2 times the stock bass... I don't like lound bass as much as clean bass and a box in the trunk with all of its rattle is out of the questions. Has anyone done their homework on the best speaker/amp combos?
