Banana- Thanks for all the info u provide...
Yes, the GPS icon does always appear for me when I drive.

One problem I have is that it seems as though the my position on the GPS always lags behing where i actually am on the road and this is ALWAYS. Would the coeff. setting fix this? That is what I would like to do. How the hell would I do this...which nev settings do I change b/c there are a bunch of em and what should I change it to. Higher or lower. I have aftermartket 17's. Im going to experiment.

I remember u saying that you are getting a new hardrive with the new software, is there any way to clone the info onto another harddrive. would I need any special adapters. My local Lex. wants to charge me 400 to install new GPS Im not going to spend that, id rather live with the sliht inaccuracy. However If I could get one cheaper Id jump on that opportunity.

Thanks again,

Jackco

Jackco,
I would set your coefficent up a bit, (increase by .010 ) see how it goes, if still not enough, go 0.010 more, like that.

HD update should cost you 270, anyone can install it, only take 5 min to install it.
Just need an labtop IDE adapter and cloning software. I backed my drive up to my PC already, just in case I need it later.

The problem is that you have to return our hard drive when you order new drive, so you have to get another labtop drive to put the data on, I personally never clone the data back to the labtop drive before, maybe be if I get my hand on a new version of software, then I will try, but else, there are no point for me to try on my 98 version.

also, I still need to find a spare laptop drive (2GB at least) to try to restore my backup data on, i don't want to pay for a new drive just to try it out, but so far, I havent find a spare drive yet (that what happen when I gave all of my lextra abtop drives away, now I need it, but find nothing hee hee)

Road intersections are kinematically the most difficult to track on...this is to say that Lexus even "tracks"...it just uses dumb points to track (dead reckons), there is no kinematic state, and no update of that state. Typically, GPS can have a CE of 30ft...I'm not sure what the Lexus NAV is...

Correction to my last post, the NAV icon took about 3-4min before it comes up on mine (sometime it took longer, don't know why), (from the moment you start the car) and stay on aabout 95% of the time, hee hee, you know where I put my eyes when I drive.

I don't know, what do you get to lose? you can always change back to your old setting if you are not happy

I've been meaning to look into this for a while, to see if the menu might allow me to adjust my navigation to cope with my wheels/tires that are larger than any stock setup. Ever since I put my fat 19 setup on the car, my nav position indicator has LAGGED big time, even with GPS signal because it doesn't update position from the sky data that often I figure.

Here's my theory and test so far:

I got into the setup menu (thanks BananaGS!) and went to the coefficient setting. It was 1.033. I wondered how that was calculated. Here's my theory. It's based on a multiplier of wheel revolutions to distance. If some tire size needs a coefficient of "1" then a smaller tire circumference would need a HIGHER multiplier because each revolution isn't going as far as the car normally thinks it's going.

OK, so I HAD the factory 17's on the car with 235/45-17 tires, and I calculate (or rather my online tire calculator does) that they were ~3.2% SMALLER than the smallest factory 16's which were 215/60-16's. So my theory is that would make for a multiplier of 1.032 - so not quite sure why it's 1.033, who knows.

Soo... I now have 245/40-19's, which are 2.14% BIGGER than the smallest factory tire, so I figure I should make the coefficient 1-.021 which is .0979. I've set it to .098 (it only has 3 decimal places) and will see how it goes!

Stay tuned for my impressions...

OK, my theory didn't work, so I've no idea how the math works. But after 'experimenting' over a week or so, I've now got it set to 1.070 and it seems about right for my fat-19 setup!

It didn't work for me. I think it's because I have the dvd based system.

You mean you couldn't get into the service menu? If so, perhaps there's a different trick to get in.

I changed my coefficient today to 1.056 - seems to be dead on now.

I tried the "secret handshake" on my '03 LS430 and got a display all in Japanese. It looks like a diagnostic screen because there are several lines ending in ":OK". There is only one button that is active on the screen and all it does (so it seems) is to re-run the diagnostics because after I push it, the "OK"s disappear and then reappear about 15 seconds later. Anyone read Japanese here? looks like it may be Katakana.

Mm-Kay. I found out how to access the diagnostics screen on my '03 LS430. Here's the procedure:

1) Apply parking brake
2) Turn Ignition to ACC or ON
3) Make sure the display is showing the map
4) While pressing the OPTION switch, turn parking lights ON->OFF->ON->OFF->ON->OFF

Ya mean changing the coefficient? It's working perfectly. Oh you mean the nav upgrade itself? It's fine too. Haven't noticed any difference in operation but I do notice there's restaurants and other things on there that weren't on my 2001 database.
