I've been wanting a more stealthy or hidden setup for my Valentine 1. I don't like the ash tray for the display-you have to look too far off the road for my comfort. I like the idea of a mirror mount remote display and gathered up info from around the web. There is an outfit that specializes in this for around $500+.
This can be DIY'd but it is not for the faint of heart. I did trash 1 remote display unit. Luckily, I was able to pick up a used display cheap on ebay. The modifications I made were a little to extensive to document-Sorry.
Just as delicate is working on the mirror itself. The right side had too many electronics in the way.I found mounting the display on the left side would work but I had to remove and relocate the Homelink module.
Tested ok-
Next step was to cut out the backing of the mirror This can be done on most mirrors. The compass in the mirror is displayed in the same way. That's how I knew this could be done.
When I was in Japan they had radar detectors/ navigation that had a small LCD screen on the dash. The most amazing part was it had an overlay map with icons of where the police were. I didn't believe it at first but then I looked and saw the police right where the map said they were. These radar detectors are hooked up to a satellite network and all of the users upload their data. The police strictly use certain frequencies so they can tell if it's a squad car or handheld radio and the icon shows that. I've always wanted one of those for the US but our police are like an explosion of frequencies and it would never work.
Woah! That's some cool technology. They have (or had) some phone app that users upload info and it maps it out. There are some units like BEL STiR+ and Escort that use GPS data. I have an STiR+ sitting around that I haven't installed. For now it's too an extensive install.
