06' IS steering wheel into a 98' GS (full info and pics)
Hey guys,
I managed to complete the IS steering wheel upgrade (for me at least) into my GS.
I found the original thread explaining this on the My IS forum.
Basically for the members that dont know yet you can mount an IS wheel to your GS steering column. This is a kool upgrade if you have the manually shiftable auto tranny in your GS. The 06' IS wheel I got came with the paddle shifters and if you get the IS wheel with the audio/phone controls you can operate your after market radio as well as your cellphone (thru blutooth) as well.
Here is a thread from a fellow member that has very good wiring diagrams and a different wheel mod:
https://www.clublexus.com/forums/gs-...-headunit.html
Here is the original DIY thread:
http://my.is/forums/#/topics/479993
I suggest you look at those threads first.
Keep in mind if you decide to do this mod you do it at your own risk and your wiring might be different.
Be careful with the air bags ALLWAYS DOSCONNECT THE BATTERY WHEN WORKING ON OR NEAR THE BAGS OR SENSORS.
and lay the disconnected air bags face up.

First I wired the paddle shifters to the OEM GS clockspring wiring connector.
Pretty cut and dry. There are 4 wires for the shifter buttons (on the clock spring connector) and two wires for the paddle shifters. Just cut the 2 extra button wires or sodder them together with the paddle wires.
Next is the cruise control. Only two wires for that. Power and negative.
Pin #5 for power on the clock spring connector.

Here's where it gets tricky but if you're good with a soddering iron you should be ok.
To be able to control my after market radio I used a PAC-SWI interface. The SWI comes with resistors that u need to connect into the clock spring connector via ONE WIRE. I used the old car phone wire (green) on the 6 pin connector.
I recommend using a small circuit board to sodder the resistors to so they don't get bent or damaged. Also trimmed down the circuit board and coated it with liquid tape then wrapped it with electrical tape.

The PAC SWI controls the radio via the steering wheel buttons by the different resistors. As you can see all the different wires from the buttons are routed into one wire. The wire ID is in the My IS post. There is no specific resistor that needs to be used for each wire. The PAC-SWI reads the different resistor values with each different button press. Programming each button is in the PAC instructions.
Basically you will be connecting all the grounds together and using only 4 wires (Brown, Grey, Yellow, Green From the IS steering wheel wiring). The 5th wire (White with Red stripe) is the Illumination wire. I chose to attach this wire to the cruise control power (Red wire from the clock spring connector). The voltage is low on this wire and is not enough to fully illuminate the steering wheel buttons. I might just disconnect the cruise control (since I NEVER use it) and use this wire for a direct power connection to the vehicle's interior lighting system so the buttons would be fully lit up and dimmable. Gotta check the wiring diagram and see what other systems cruise is a part of. I'll get back to this later on.

On to the air bag.
Be advised; Takata has a major air bag recall which has affected some IS models.
You can't use the IS air bag igniter in the GS unless you re-wire it to work for a single stage system. I got lucky and was able to use an extra GS air bag that I had that has a square bolt pattern. Some GS bags are hexagonal in shape. Those bags wont fit in the IS bag because it has a square bolt pattern as well.
Here you see the single stage GS igniter in the IS bag.

That's pretty much it. Take care when installing the IS bag onto the steering wheel so you dont crush the resistor wiring. And when you attach the modded wheel to the steering shaft do not over torque the shaft nut.
You will also have to trim down the rear plastic cover of the IS wheel so the clock spring connector can fit thru. I also added some plastic brackets to help the clock spring turn when turning the wheel.
videos to come.

Ready to try.
Ok. Your guidamce is most appreciated especially with wiring.
i got the horn pad and steering wheel from an 08 IS amd will attempt to install in 99 Aristo.
The IS wheel has paddles . Stereo and display controls. (Anxiety caused the missing out of the Tel controls)
So i am going to do the shifer, the cruise and hopefully the radio.
I will ask you a few questions hoping your memory of the wiring is still cached.
And of course i will post as it goes along.
Thanks for your explanation Tank.

Aristo 6 pin plug. Wired to gear up down / cruise/ horn. There is one of the six not used yet which mught be illumination. I will ck that when i get into the car itsrlf tomorrow
I have confirmed that in the Aristo the green is a spare on the steering side of the clockspring as thecplugvthat goes into the bottom of the spring is blank for that pin.

So at this moment I am not in a poaituon to wire up the audio controls as my clockspring is a 6 pin plus 2 for air bag.
There is one of the six that i did not use which maybe for illum or something else.
My car is an Aristo and I doubt different to GS but there was a two pin plug going to space coming from the six pin and the orig cruise which had not two but three wires. Red blk and blue.

Tis IN!!!
Innstalled using orig clockspring.
Just the plastic at thr back of yhe steering needed a little cutting to clear the rectangular plugs on the clockspring.
Keep in mind no rafio or phone controls yet.
Is250 in. Cruise gears horn aorbag all operational.
