factory stereo
What is the wattage of the factory stereo for a 92 es with just a cassete player? Also i just bought some no name 10"subs that say they are 600 watts, thats all the info they give, there is two of them, both are enclosed. What kind of amp would you recomend? thanks in advance.

Speaker "wattage" ratings are generally meaningless. It means that the speakers could handle 600 watts of power, maximum, before they'd blow out. I can tell you that my '94 ES had a maximum power output of 180 watts. There are too many variables involved to really answer your question accurately.

is there any simple way to go? can i just get a certain amp and be safe, i dont want huge power, but how much of a difference does it make if the amp is over or under powered or does that just determine how loud it can be? I know nothing about stereo stuff so im stuck on what to buy next. Thanks again

I'll try to tell you in simple terms about amplifier power.
If you get a high powered amplifier it can drive a low powered speaker into distortion. This could possibly blow the speaker if you want to play the audio system at very high volume. (Where the sound is distorted).
On the other hand, if you get a low power amplifier and you try to play it at loud volume this also could ruin the speakers. Reason being, the amplifier will distort and this distortion can also blow the speaker.
Since the speakers that you have claim that they can handle 600 watts of power it means that you could get any amplifier that is below 600 watts. Once again, this is a very rough way of determining a balanced system. Other technical things that might possibly be over your head would be, amplifer distortion characteristics, speaker efficiency, etc, etc.
Question: Are the subs self powered or do you intend driving them with the main amplifier?
P.S. I'm leaving on vacation tomorrow morning and I won't be back until the beginning of October, so if I can't answer any more questions soon I hope you can understand. Maybe one of the other members can pipe in here.

From what you're saying, I don't think the speakers you have are true subwoofers since you mentioned that there are tweeters within the same cabinet! True subwoofers handle only the lowest band of frequencys and they could be self-amplified or not. In the meantime you could call Crutchfield to get a better idea of what's involved with this installation.(1-800-555-9507). Checkout their website here: www.crutchfield.com They're a nice company to deal with and very helpful.
