![Question](https://www.clublexus.com/forums/images/icons/icon5.gif)
I am looking at installing a cap-.5 farad stiffening cap to assist my Alpine MRD-M300 amp drive my sub. The Infinity Kappa Perfect 10.1d has a good tight sound but I'm hopeing the cap will give me a even cleaner sound.
My question is, the cap I have was breifly used by my brother and he was telling me that he had to charge the cap before he used it. So do I need to charge it before I install it (how would you do that?), or should I just install it and let the alternator charge it?

Charge the cap before you install it. A cap is typically charged thru a resistor, which limits the current flow so that you don't fry anything or take out your fuses or circuit breakers. Ground the 'ground' side of the cap, then connect the 'positive' 12V side to one side of a resistor, say 75-100 ohms, then connect the other side of that resistor to +12V. That will limit the current to less than 150mA. Use a voltmeter to determine when the cap is fully charged - monitor the voltage at the (+) terminal of the cap with a voltmeter. It may take a few minutes to charge up fully. Connect into your system when charged.

Thanks for the help. I don't have the orginal resistor that came with the cap but it shouldn't be that hard to get one. I'll let you know how it turns out.
Did you get a obvious better sound from your sub when you added your cap? Or did it just clear up the light dimming problem?

I don't know if u seen your amp with out the cap ,but it will only show that you amp is only getting like 12.0 or less , and that amp that u have requiers 14 .0 at all time if you doing the 2ohms for the full 300 watts at a single sub.with the cap you will always be at 14.0 or 13.8 wich is alot better.
