In May, we reported that the Lexus LF-A will make its official debut at this year’s Tokyo Motor Show and will hit the streets in 2010.
Now, according to our trusted sources (this include also Japan’s Best Car Magazine), we found out that the new supercar will carry a 4.8-liter V10 engine, codenamed ‘1LR-GEU’, capable to deliver an impressive 550 hp.

Also with a 4.8L engine if by typical Lexus displacement naming it would be SS 480, but they've decided to go for hp so SS 550 would be the result, should that convention be used. I suppose they could go for SS 500 to be closer, then do something like Mercedes where the S500 sells as the S550 here.

I'm VERY skeptical about that SS rumor for the Lexus supercar. For one, those initials are too closely associated with Chevrolet. And why did Lexus register/copyright the LFA initials and have LF-A prominently displayed on the 24 hours of Nürburgring racers if they didn't intend to use that as the model/series name?

Indeed, it makes sense to call it an -F model since it has been badged that way. And Lexus did trademark LFA without any hyphens. But LFA-F sounds a bit strange. Perhaps GT-F as the other contender?

I just think it'll keep the LFA (or LF-A) moniker in its final production guise. There's an "F" in there, and there's no law or rule that the "F" has to appear at the end.

They have their own thing going on, I was rather surprised to see IS-F when it first was named as such but now it makes sense.

I heard one LF-A caught on fire...The other car finished 14th which isn't bad.

I must say pretty ballsy for lexus to drop prototypes into the race. Impressed with the gung-ho ness but damn...to have a car catch on fire? kinda sucks.
Don't be a gallardo pls!

So was I, and I couldn't help but write this goofy reaction a little over 3 years ago:

Anyhow, back to the naming discussion, it intrigued me to read in Lexus: The Relentless Pursuit (2004), which was published before the IS-F came out, of ongoing plans for a gas-electric hybrid 'Super LS' along with top-of-the-line sports models, which an 'undated internal memo' codenamed the 'F-Sports' models. So it seems they had the idea for such a naming convention for at least 3 years prior to official announcement. We have since gotten the LS 600h L, the IS-F...an exotic sports coupe is alluded to in the book...and now we have the LF-A.
