F1 is the top motorsport in the world. It's the most difficult motorsport to compete it, and it takes a lot to score a victory, not to mention win a championship. It took Ferrari 20 years to achieve their first Grand Prix victory.

Toyota started in F1 from scratch, which is unlike most teams that simply started as engine suppliers or chassis makers. It will take some time, but with more experience Toyota will succeed in F1.

As for that good season, it was in the 2005 season that Toyota did reasonably well in F1, with several 2nd place finishes.

and 4th in the championship, 13 points behind Ferrari all because they didn't run at Indy, giving Ferrari an easy 1-2 (18 points) finish at a race where Jarno Trulli qualified on pole.

Toyota officials let slip in Tokyo that the production car, likely to be called the LF-A, too, is going to have a V10 engine, developed from the engines in Toyota's F1 cars, which is thought to develop over 500bhp and give 280km/h-plus capability. Although the engine is front- rather than mid-mounted, the LF-A will be rear-wheel drive, and Lexus has promised "the ultimate weight balance", "extravagant comfort" and "precision operation."

While we’ve now snapped the coupé with only minimal disguising, word is that the LF-A could as well come with the option of a metal folding roof, as Lexus aims to take on the likes of the Mercedes SL65 AMG as well as the Porsche 911 Turbo, Ferrari F430 and Aston Martin DB9 coupes and their drop-top counterparts.

My bet is for "GT-F" being the production name for the car.

With regards to the Auto Express bit of news, although the engine is front-mounted, it's mid mounted at the front. What this means is that the engine weight is equally distributed on the front axle. Plus, having the transmission and radiators in the rear allows for Toyota engineers to give the car basically a perfectly balanced weight distribution.

This also confirms some previous rumours, with regards to "the ultimate weight balance", "extravagant comfort" and "precision operation." The exact same thing was rumoured to have been said last year by Toyota officials in Japan.

Aston Martins do this with engine placement. Perfectly acceptable for high performance.

So no AWD? That will certainly help with weight.

Actually, front mid mounted means that the engines mass is located towards the middle of the car with respect to the front axle, ie in between the front and the rear axle. In a typical mid engine [rear mid engine] car like the F430 or the NSX, that would be just in front of the rear axle. In the LF-A it would be just behind the front axle.

And this is why 911s are considered rear engine cars.

October cannot come too soon for this supercar...they should rename it GT-F soon, the LF-A title has been around for 2+ years now and really started to stick...

I'd rather see they stick to the LF-A name, which sounds much more unique and exotic to me than the much overly used "GT" moniker.

Lexus LF-A

The LF-A hasn't yet been confirmed for production, but the sustained testing of prototypes like this suggest that it's a definite contender
