If you are wondering, all the cars that beat it are GT3 or GT2 racing cars, with the possible exception of an Audi TTS (probably a racecar, need to verify)and the Scirocco GT24-CNG (purpose built for this race/series).

There were only a handful of cars that beat the LFA. Of those cars most of them were SP9 which is FIA GT3. The GT2 M3 which won is of course a GT2 car, but it's equalized to SP9 standards. The point is those cars are much lighter than the LFA and though based off production cars are really race cars. Even the Porsche GT3's are GT3 race cars which are equal to the GT class in racing like the Rolex Series or Grand Am. Still, even though the LFA weighs around 3000+ lbs in the race trim, it's still a good 300lbs. heavier than the top cars. But almost equally as fast. In the wet it's even better. During practice in the wet it was 3rd fastest. A good victory!

can't figure out those results at all (from here: http://adac.24h-rennen.de/Live-Ranking.4243.0.html) what is the Zeit column!? the numbers are all over the place. how did an M3 come in '1st'?
"Runde" i assume is laps so maybe it's a war of attrition as the '1st' and '2nd' did 154 laps and everyone else did less?

Yeah, from what I gather, the overall winner is the car that completed the highest # of laps within the 24 hours. The overall winner among all classes completed 154 laps. As SP8 class (near production) winner, the LFA #50 completed 142 laps, 12 less than the different class M3. The SP8 class runner-up, the #7 Rapide, completed 134 laps, 20 less than the highest.

Yes how many started the race in GT3 or GT2 classes. It is obvious that 18 finished ahead of the LFA, but are they all in the mentioned classes?

All endurance competitions that I'm aware of run over a set period of time (e.g., 24 hours in this case) so it's a matter of how much distance is completed when the race is called.

Also, every endurance competition is about attrition, not lap times... IIRC the Abt R8 and GT3R Hybrid consistently set better pace than the M3 GT2 and many other R8s and Porsches also led the M3 early in the race. The M3 benefited from failures from basically all the other top cars (including the Abt R8 in the latter part of the race) as well as better fuel economy, resulting in fewer pit stops (a big deal in VLN since only gravity filling is allowed). The GT3R did well for the same reason (until it also suffered mechanical failure) - it could go much longer without pitting than its main competitors, including all its Porsche brothers.


Well the F430 GTC for sure was in a lower class (the GTC is actually modified down from stock 4.3L to just a 4L engine specifically to race in sub-4000cc classes like SP7). I wouldn't be surprised if a Porsche or 2 in SP7 also finished ahead of the 19th-place LFA.

I am not sure why the M3 GT2 had to race in E1-XP, which is usually reserved for specially-invited cars that do not qualify for the displacement restrictions and engine types in other classes (the GT3R Hybrid also raced in E1-XP, for example). The E46-based M3 GTR had to race in E1 in years past because it had a V8 instead of the production I6, but the E92 M3 GT2 should not have that problem. Maybe they had more aggressive modifications which made it ineligible for SP7.

It was in SP7, but it is a GT2 race car, strange as most of the other cars in SP7 are GT3 racers and cup cars....

the difference in the classes are dramatic. The LFA isn't a race prepped car. It's close to production as was the others in it's class. SP7 and SP9 are for GT3 class racers. FIA GT3 is close to GT2 from the ACO. Like LeMans series GT2 class race cars. The M3, the F430, the Porsche GT3 R, Audi R8 LMS, all FIA GT3 class, the M3 probably runs a restrictor which helps with fuel economy but limits power which is why it's a bit slower than the Audi's and Porsche's.

The LFA wasn't in SP7 or SP9 class, but was in close to production class of SP8 which has engine size over 4liters.

hey CLers. i was lucky to see the prototype yesterday. i was in such a rush i didn't really ask anything other than if it was ok to snap some photos. it is not a hybrid. the guy started up the car and it fired right up. it was the first time i heard it so i can't compare engine sounds. but i can say it was very smooth sounding and i expected it to be a little louder/raspier.
