Flashback Friday: There Are Still Unsold LFAs Lurking in the Wild
By Brett Foote

Believe it or not, there are at least a dozen "new" Lexus LFAs out there in the wild. And now, the Internet has tracked many of them down.

Just because a few are unsold doesn't mean they are for sale.

My thoughts exactly. I think these are likely display pieces in dealerships.

Dealers know they are rising in value and they work as marketing props while appreciating

Yeah, one of my dealerships here has a very nice slate grey LFA that is parked in the dealership. Apparently, he drives it in the summer and then parks it in the dealership in the winter or ships to his Florida home. He has had it for 8 years now and the sales person was telling me he gets offers quite often, but does not want to sell it.

Took me over a year to buy one of the “unsold” ones. All these articles are fake news. The unsold ones were never offered for sale. Even the one I bought i had to wait for the original owner at dealership to step away from business and then got his kids to sell it to me before they sold the whole dealership

Congrats. Post some pictures please. A review of your LFA would be nice.

Thats the most interesting LFA tidbit that I've heard all year.

Was there some corporate stipulations or pressure for them to keep it unsold and pristine?

I don't think there are any corporate stipulations. Like the rest of us, many dealer principals are car enthusiasts and simply wanted to keep their LFAs. The easiest way to do that for them was to leave them unsold and drive them on dealer plates, rather than pay sales tax to register and title them.

The whole "unsold LFA" thing has pretty much been a myth for years. Journalists love to bring this up as a story every time they review Lexus' sales numbers, but it's not based in reality.

If anything, it's a testament to how special the LFA is that so many dealers have held onto theirs over the years, and this story has propagated as a result.
