Default Replacing standard headlight bulbs with HID

Romini -- I read the thread below concerning this subject and I'm a bit confused. I have a 1998 GS 400 with standard non-HID bulbs, and I would like to get that HID look. I thought I understood what you were saying about buying HID bulbs that have been rebased to fit into the existing sockets, but then you all started talking about ballast and I got confused. My question is simple. Can I buy new re-based bulbs and simply plug them into my existing setup?

Nope. You can get the HID "color" bulbs but they are not HIDs in terms of brightness. In order to ignite the gas in the true HID bulbs, you need a ballast. A 9006 HID kit usually contains a rebased HID bulb and ballast.

Thank you. Where can I get the 9006 kit and about how much does it cost? Can I install it myself? Thanks for your help.

If you're looking to get a Philips 6000K HID kit, you can email sales@kwimports.com and get it for $460 shipped I believe, if you mention that one of the LS400 moderators from clublexus referred you. Otherwise, it's $494.

It's plug and play, so you should be able to install it yourself in around an hour to an hour and a half if this is your first time.
