Question any upgrade/replacement for reading lights

I am not real happy with the brillant, near blinding reading lights in my 2005 LS 430--
does anyone know of a way to modify them to be similar to those in a BMW, which is like a pinpoint spotlight?

Well the map lights in most cars are diffused behind a cover, correct? So unless you were to replace the entire housing or drill a hole in it or something similar it would be difficult to get a focused or directed type light through the cover.

If you think they're too bright you can simply replace the bulb, I think it's bulb type 3175. You can reduce the glare by lowering the luminosity by either going with a different color (i.e. more bluey or amber-ish) of the same bulb type.

-or-

You can try replacing it with a LED type bulb which should produce an overall less-bright light because even though the LEDs are more brilliant and intense, they are also more directional than traditional lights.

Try SuperbrightLEDs.com, the LED equivalent to the 3175 is 3022 Festoon type.
