Aftermaket harness or not is the question
guys, need your input on this.
for those who had standard halogen headlights with 9006 bulbs who converted to factory hids. did you use an aftermarket harness to protect your electrical system?
i know a lot of people just wired the factory 9006 to the ballast and that's it, no relays..nothing.
is this safe, since to power up the hids, it takes a lot of power during the initial start up.
let hear from the HID gurus..
My hunch is to use an aftermarket wire harness with relays to bypass the stress of the initial start-up on the stock system.

Corky arent you a member at Hidplanet? Well its there in the univeristy, and to answer your question, Yes you should use a aftermarket wirring harness, the stock wirring was only designed to handle a certain ammount of amps, at start up when hid lights are still warming up they are pulling a very high load of amps which even though might not blow any fuses, degrades your relay and wirring harness. Its as cheap as 20 dollers to get a new harness I can get you a picture of the package if you want, they sell them in napa or autozone or pepyboys whatever is closer to you and they only cost $20. Its called an auxilary foglight wirring harness and its very easy to install, you can even use the existing grounding points on the car.

Re:
I asked the same question before I switched my halogens to OEM HID's. I was told there's no need for the wiring harness and it poses no danger to cut off the 9006 connector and attach. Even though there is a short voltage spike upon HID startup, it won't damage the wires since halogens constantly run at higher voltages.

I cut off the 9006 connector, put on two female spades on positive and negative, and then connected to the ballast connector. Then covered it with electrical tape.
I've had no problems since I put them on over 18 months ago.
I would like to know what others are doing.

Is this the harness you are talking about?

Do you just plug in between the oem wiring and lights, and go?
