Question 2GS4 - Upgrading your Headlight + Fog Light

Hey guys, before I get going.....I searched but couldnt find exact answers. I am sure its been discussed so hopefully someone can point me in the right direction.

Here goes:

Part 1 - Like many others, I would like to upgrade my OEM HID to 6000k Philips bulbs. This part is easy, buy them and install.

Part 2(Question part) - With my OEM 4300k D2R bulbs, I would like to purchase the required pieces to do a FOG HID. Is it possible for me to upgrade/buy new wiring, buy additional ballasts/igniter and use the 4300K D2R bulbs in the fog lights. I figure this way, I am not buying more that I need, in this case the bulbs. You can always find OEM Lexus Ballastscheaper then aftermarket ones because of all the lighting upgrading.

Let me if in theory this is possible? Or has anyone done this??

Thanks :
S

umm for the fogs, you wouldnt use the d2r bulbs since it wont fit in the 9006 bulb socket. what you want is a rebased d2r bulb with a 9006 base. then make a simple relay wiring harness (from the 9006base to the ballast) and then just buy this( http://xenondepot.com/product.php?product_id=50 ) wiring harness from xenondepot to take car of the integration of the factory fog wiring and the ballasts.

or, you could just buy a 9006 hid kit and save yourself the trouble.

also note that once u do the low beam HID conversion you will lose the use of your foglights unless you do the relay mod which lets the fogs run independant of the lowbeams. (not 100% on that part but reasonably sure). do a search in the lighting forum and the GS forums on fog light relay or something siilar to get the thread u need if/when u have to do that cheap and simple mod.

I will do the fog light mod, I have seen it documented for the GS.

For the 40.00 wiring kit, plus ballasts, plus rebased 9006 = HID FOGs.....!

So, basically, my existing D2R's cant be utilized? Other than potential Ebay sale??

unlike H4 bulbs (which can use adapters to fit d2r/s into the h4 socket), 9006 sockets only accept rebased HID bulbs since the socket isnt the right shape to fit a full d2 bulb.

ebay the bulbs or put them up in the classifieds.

make note of the fact that you will need to MAKE your own wiring harness between the bulbs and the ballast. the xenondepot harness (which is $40 per SIDE i believe, may want to double check on that) hooks up the ballasts to the factory harness.

for the custom harness id just get these 9006 PLUG&PLAY CONNECTORS from www.hidexpert.com
http://www.hidexpert.com/producthtml/all_products.html# (7th item down)

So, I should be able to pick up some ballast from ebay (OEM Lexus/other?) or aftermarket, plus rebased 9006 and the wiring.

honestly, just go buy this kit.

sorry..no ebay links.

its from the same guy who sells from hidexpert.com.

all the ballasts are genuine denso/koito OEM toy/lex ballasts and the bulbs are all genuine phillips 4300k (yours is a rebased version)

buy this, then just modify it a tad to use a relay instead of directly off the switch (tons of thread on this in this forum) and there you go.

I don't understand why you would want to switch out the stock 4300K bulbs for 6000K bulbs in the first place. You already have a set-up that will put more candlepower on the road. The 6000K bulbs being bluer project LESS light. White light is made up of the full spectrum of light energy. By going to a more blue in color bulb, you are leaving out a significant portion of the spectrum and hence have less overall illumination. Its Physics 101.

yea but 6000k is more of an aesthetic mod than anything else. the actual lumen output is decreased but not nearly as much as say 8000k+. also, it is blue but not blue enough to the point it fatigues the eyes during extended use.

just check this thread/poll.

After searching, buy a readyy-made kit is the easiest. This is prolly what I will do. Thanks for your help.

Like the old saying goes, "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder".
Then again they also say, "There is no accounting for taste".
So, I guess you pays your money, you takes your choice.

Was there a noticeable difference - how much of a difference, can you post more pics?

Are your HID headlamps plug and play as well, OEM, or retrofitted? Thanks.
