Burnt out HID bulb or failing ballast?

Burnt out HID bulb or failing ballast?
Hi everyone, I was driving home tonight in my 98' GS400 and noticed that my HID headlights weren't very bright on one side. I pulled over on a side street to look at my car from the front. My driver's side headlight was emitting a light purple beam that was very dim. I turned the headlights off, then turned it back on. I did this several times but they wouldn't go to the 4300k pure white color.
My question is: If the bulb is burnt out and no longer good, is the bulb supposed to completely fail as in not turn on at all? Or does a symptom of a bad OEM 4300K HID bulb result in a light purple beam? Or maybe it could have to do something with my ballast or some other electircal related problem with the headlight not charging the xenon gas properly?
Any info. or input is greatly appreciated.

This is crazy as I have the same problem with the purple hue from the drivers side which just started 2nite. Is there a way to verify that this is the problem and not ballast or other? before I go ahead any buy new bulbs?

The 1st gen Denso (which we have in our cars) are very tough ballasts. I rarely see them fail!

I dont know about others, but I find myself going back to the OEM 4100k. If you want a white color light with a hint of blue, then the 85126CM will be around 4800k. IMO, the 6000k is too blue for me. THen again, I'm a sucker for OEM color/output

Cheapest price you can get on these Philips D2R ($90 shipped for the pair). You'll be walking out sore from the dealer because they'll charge you about $250-300 a set for the same thing.

Burned out Bulb?
They don't always burn completely out, mine would turn on for a second or two then go out, if you can get to both sides swap them out, thats what I did. I just dropped my car off at the Lexus dealer, they wanted $450 for a HID bulb? lol, what were they smoking?
