Whattayaknow?! Sylvania Silverstar burnt out...
#17
"[QUOTE=SupermanGS;2394084]Just a week or so back I made a post regarding the Sylvania 9006 highbeam bulbs modded to fit the normal headlight. Well as I was driving to work today I pulled up behind a truck and saw my driverside headlight was out."
The 9006 bulb is the low beam. The high beam is the 9005. The mod I am familiar with involves cutting a small piece of the plastic tab off the 9005 bulb so it will fit in the 9006 bulb holder. I did this on my ES (using Silverstars) about two years ago, and the bulbs are still working fine.
"I'm not exactly sure what caused it.. but I pulled the bulb and it appears to be burnt out. I could only look at it really quickly as I was running late to work but it seemed the silver/blueish tip thats on the bulb had melted down the inside a little bit."
The 9005 bulb does not have the "silver-bluish" tip. It is clear. This is part of the reason for the increased light output (in addition to the higher wattage).

for those who want more output in halogen form, take a look at HIR bulbs instead. They have more output than your regular halogen (~1750 lumens vs 1000). Sure it cost $30 per bulb, but they will last longer than silverstar and it actually puts more light onto the road!
a very small notch is required to fit though, which is no problem.

This is how they look like:

HIR is the way to go... i have them in my GS fogs, and 93 SC in the high's and lows... and they put out much more light then stockers. ANd they dont throw out the beam pattern like HID kits. Nor do they heat up like stockers.

Silverstars are awful. I have been going through them for the past couple years.. They all die at random times.. and I always make sure nothing touches them and to do it while it's dry out.
I got so mad at having to spend so much every time they went out... once the last one went out.. I ripped the 3 remaining out and just put some regular autozone bulbs in.
I was not amused when I saw they had some new Silverstars advertising longer life. NO THANK YOU.

I tried taking pictures while i had one stock bulb, and one HIR, but I couldnt capture a good image. But they are worth every penny of $60 bucs.
EDIT: Beam pattern was not affected, which is my favorite part.

I found this thread from another forum, let me copy paste the post:
3 High-beam bulbs tested...
A: 9005 Blue tinted bulb from JCWhitney.
These are your basic blue tinted bulbs that a lot of people carry.
B: Factory Sylvania 9005 bulb.
These were in my 2002 S-10 when I purchased it.
C: 9011 HIR bulb.
This is a replacment for the 9005 bulb
----
Head on shot:
As for as lumens go...
On the low-beam side...
9006 Standard Halogen Bulb = 1100
9012 HIR Bulb = 1875
D2S HID Bulb = 3200
On the high beams...
9005 Standard Halogen Bulb = 1900
9011 HIR Bulb = 2500
See the light output on the ground, the HIR bulb is so much brighter.
The HIR bulb still uses 55/60 watts, so you don't need to upgrade your wiring.
Get the 9011 HIR bulb for your low beam, mod the socket, then you will get a bright light as close to D2S HID bulb.
