how to tell difference

how can you tell the difference between non hid headlights and hid headlights.
i'm plannin to buy a set of headlights but he doesn't know if they are hids or not.

Ask him for pictures? Ask him if there are ballast present on the under side of the headlight. Also ask him to look for warning stickers on the back of the headlight telling its an HID headlight and can cause shock or death. :-/
