Default 7440 turn signal bulbs for cleared/aftermarket tail light dilema

To my knowledge all of the aftermarket tail lights for our cars use regular fillament bulbs for the turn signals which are 7440 except maybe the Sonar LEDs which i think might be 1156 size. I recently purchased some LED tails and had to repalce the stock 7440 bulbs which are white and not street legal. My first idea was to buy some chrome bulbs that blink amber because i did not want to have amber reflecting in the chrome housing. As i turns out i read many ppl saying that these are far too weak when they light up on bright days. Most "stealth bulbs" as they are called seem to have this problem, however PIAA makes some that might be brighter (if anyone is running these and can confirm this let me know). I ended up buying red bulbs made by polarg which turned out to be terrible (very dim, and blink pink instead of red ). Im thinking of trying red LEDs with a load resistor next so i can have a nice red blinker without the color reflecting in the housing. I have researched this a lot and many ppl say the same thing about the led's (that theyre not bright enough). However many new and stronger ones have come out recently so i was thinking of giving them a try. So my question is this: what are you running in your cleared/aftermarket tails as far as the 7440 bulb that gives you a blinker that can be clearly seen on a sunny day and doesnt reflect an ugly color in your housing? especially in regards to Red LED's such as the (30 SMD LED's) found on eBay .

I was brainstorming on this before when I saw a newer 5 series. With the new 5, the turn signal is in a clear housing but blinks red. It's like a solid LED red. I don't know if you can buy like.. a strip of red LED's and use those as your turn signal, but if you could.. then that's what I'd do.

I have the SONAR LED tails and yes, the stock turn signals bulbs were so weak you couldn't see them flash in the daytime. I now have the PIAA mirror orange bulbs for the turn signals and they are 10 times brighter. I would go with the PIAAs if you can find them. The PIAAs still look a little amber with a light silver tint. These are what they look like with my tails. I hope that helps.

dunno how you feel about them but the sylvania silverstar turn signals have always given me good results. They look kinda bluish in the housing and light up a little darker orange, so the change inside the housing is dramatic enough to be noticed even on bright days

Good thread. My OEM work fine it seems in my aftermarket tails but I want something more clear instead of my yellowish look.

I used the "Stealth Auto" bulbs, silver coating flash amber in my 02 Es for almost 5 years and never had a problem. I hear you on the "not bright enough on a sunny day" thing, it was always a concern. I can say that no one ever beeped at me for what they thought was a no signal turn.

I don't use these bulbs in my GS, so you are welcome to them if you want. I have 6 (4 used and 2 brand new). I posted them up in the ES classified a while ago, but no one was interested.

Let me know.
