Default SC300 volume/ temp **** LED DIY

This was being discussed in another thread last night, so I decided to have a look today. They are illuminated by some very dim incandescent bulbs with green covers. I decided to make my own since I had the LEDs and resistors laying around. I used standard 3mm LEDs, which have a very narrow beam pattern, however they go up into a prism, reflector arrangement, so the light gets pretty evenly distributed.

I just wrapped the legs of the LED and the resistor around the base just like they originally were. The Legs of the LED are pretty thick, I ground them down with a dremel, they wouldn't install with the thick legs, they wouldn't go down far enough to turn to lock.

After I turned them to lock them in place, I just bent the resistors down and out of the way so the rear cover would snap back on, they look good, and they were free

Good job! Just a note, these are usually very brittle and break so be careful. (the actual circuit board!) Some are in a lot better condition than others.

I didn't handle the circuit board too much, but I did notice the bulb sockets were discolored and seemed brittle (from heat). just in the few minutes to take pics, the "green side" got warm to the touch, and of course the blue side stayed cool... dontcha just love LEDs?

Wish someone sold a complete interior kit of LEDs as drop
in replacements for the truely lazy.
Don't have the time to search bulb types, order, fabricate
sockets & all the BSing around.

Looks really good thou.

yeah, it's fun though, and it can be as enjoyable and rewarding as any other mods, and it's WAAAY cheaper than playing under the hood

We offered it a few years back and everyone wanted to go to that superbrightled's place and get drop in replacements on their own.

could you offer this service again as a pakage deal that would include gauge cluster, climate control, and temp **** ????

Is there soldering involved in this mod? If not seems like a simple enough DIY. ebay 3mm led w/ resistor for 12v should be right i'd presume. Wished it was cheaper since we'd only need like 2 maybe 1 red for the hazard if there is a light.

Uhh, yes, how do you think the resistor is attached to the LED? And u will need 4, there are 2 bulbs for each "****"

Yeah that would be good to sell those!

Or even just the plastic cover thing.

I need help with my temp/volume control leds. For some reason the Temp leds do not light, even when I installed new leds...the volume **** does backlight but the temp **** does not. Any ideas? Can the board actually blow out or could it be a bad wire, if so which wire behind the temp control **** controls the lighting of the leds?

Did they all work before? Did you make them yourself or use store bought replacements?, did you solder the resistor to the wrong leg of the LED? did you swap them around (do they work in other locations?) did you hook them right to a battery to check the LED outside of the switch housing? Did you just swap the LED 180 degrees to change the polarity? I don't remember which wire it is, but you can follow the trace on the circuit board or if you can't see it, use an ohm meter on the exposed contacts where the bulb goes and touch each pin in the connecter till you find two that go right to the bulb sockets.

Provided they are in correctly, like I said the board tracers are brittle and can screw up easily. That's why I made the effort to warn everyone. Gotta be CAREFUL with these. The OP's temp **** MOBo is in a lot better shape than most are - by looking at his pic. Most are discolored and very brittle.
