HID's on Stock Cars w/o Housings
I have seen many older model Acua TL's with HID lights but standard halogen light housings. Why is it such a bad thing not to have the proper housings if actual car makers used them?

I'm pretty sure that those TL's had HID housings. They didn't have HID projector headlights but the reflective housings were made to utilize HID bulbs (D2R). Some newer Fords and I think the Prius have reflective housings that are made for HID. These kind of setups can't match the output of a TSX, TL, S2000 etc. but they are OEM & dot legal and do not cause half the glare that most HID kits in reflective housings do.

And if you do decide to go with an HID kit in a 'non HID' housing, you can pull it off no problem. Its a matter of the headlamp construction. If you have the cap on the end of the bulb, thats one plus and make sure to AIM them properly!
I will be getting a 6000k set for my 01, es300 [non-hid headlamps]
Why 6000k ? Because a friend is giving them to me! Otherwise i would have gotten 4300k.

So it is okay to have HID's on a non HID housing.
My 2002 ES 300 has a cap over the bulb. But the actual projector is quite large.
Would you guys recommend me doing HID's on them?
I really don't want to spend 500 dollars on the OEM HID Housings

NO...if you're not looking for a projector retrofit, then simply putting a HID bulbs, even D2R, will not make things any better...no matter how much you re-aim the housing, you will still get scattered lights everywhere. Most of the time, you will be lighting the road with your glare instead of with the actual light.
but it's your car, so....
