Default question about hid ballast

my friend has a 2009 is250 ballast that he doesnt need and i was wondering if it would fit my 2gs (2002 gs300) without any modifications? would it be a direct plug and play?

thanks!

The 2009 IS250 uses a Denso D4 ballast capable of powering up D4S bulb made for projector-style headlight. I believe the 2002 GS uses a D2 ballast capable of powering up D2R bulb made for reflector-style headlight. I don't think it will fit.

The low beam headlamps run HID-D2R (gs300) and the 2002 lexus gs runs HID-D4S (is250).

So his ballasts WONT work on my car?

If that's really the case (your 2002 gs run HID-D4S), then it must have projector-style headlight. I thought all 2gen GS use reflector-style headlight using either D2R or D4R bulb. I may be wrong though.

Either way, the is250 ballast is specifically shaped to fit underneath the is250 headlight housing. There's a rubber lining that goes around the outer edge of the ballast to keep moisture out as you screw the ballast onto the headlight. If your GS uses a differently shaped ballast, then it might not work.

^ you are absolultely correct. my car is currently halogens right now (no projectors) , running 9006 and 9005 bulbs.

from my understanding isn't the point of getting an hid ballast to switch from halogen to hid, therefore, you would be using HID bulbs?

Ok in your case, you can use your friend IS250 ballast and find a spot outside the headlight to mount the ballast. Then you will need to get a D4R bulb (designed for reflector-style headlight like your 2gen GS). You could use D4S bulb but it will be extra glaring.

quick clarification, which bulb do i use? do u mean the d4r? or d2r (which is the bulb thats specific to the 2gs)

so it should still be a direct plug n play right?

thanks a lot! your the best! literally!

Since you're not retrofitting an oem projector into your 2gen GS, then you need a 9006 bulb type to go into your halogen lowbeam reflector housing, but check your lowbeam bulb type to verify. A D4R or D2R bulb will not fit in your case.

update: got everything settled and got the HID's on. ended up needing a 9006 type bulb.

in my case, just like you said, the d4r and d2r bulb wont work (as they are for hid headlights)

sounds easy enough but for a while i was super

thanks for all your help!
