I heard that the 2001 tailights will fit on a 97. I've actually seen them on a 97. BUT, the car had other body work to the rear due to an accident, so I'm not sure if he replaced brackets, clips, harnesses, etc to make it fit. My guess is, they bolt right on.
I would like to see if anyone knows exactly what must be done because if I ever bought a 97, I would definetly upgrade to the new style lights. Difference is night and day, car looks 4 times better from the rear, and twice as good from the side (the clear white strip is noticable from the side and makes the whole car look newer)

I personally don't buy it. Do you have any other sources saying they won't fit? If Lexus changed them, then they changed them ONLY to be annoying, I can't see how it would make any sense to change the body stamp just so the taillights will bolt in differently. Sure the Lexus dealer may not want to do it, but perhaps it isnt impossible.
Remember the 01-03 tails fit perfect on the 98-00 GS.

i still have a feeling that the tail lights can fit... the headlights i'm not so sure. a slight change in the headlights could mean you'd have to do a whole new front end (on some cars). the headlights should fit too though... lexus didn't change the body style from 97-2001. it was all one 4-year body style.

I cant believe there isn't a single person on this board that didn't already do this. Maybe it's because the title of the thread isn't enough to get a lot of members to see what it's about.

Also the taillights and headlights are pretty expensive... don't want to buy them and have them sit around my house wasted doing nothing...
I'm kinda on a tight buget here, modding my AE86 and now the ES300 mod bug has got me... so any of you guys know where the cheapest place to get the taillights and headlights??... i guess i'll have to be the test person for this project...
But it won't happen soon... probably around the christmas time... keep you guys updated about it...
Thanks to everyone that helped out...

there aren't that many 97 and up ES owners on here.
i agree with zeta, and SW03ES, there has to be a way to make it fit!!!!!! it would be a bad economic move for lexus to perform more than cosmetic modification to the 00-01 ES.

FWIW,
The part #'s for the 00-01 tail lights are different than the 97-99's (likely due to the all-clear lenses), whereas the part # for the trunk lid is the same for 97 through 01. Also, there is only one illustration for both model year tail lights. This would lead me to believe that the 00-01 lights will fit 97-99 models.
