Default ~ PLEASE HELP ~ HID Questions 35w OR 55w

Hey everyone, need help on choosing the correct type of HID's. I plan on using the stock projectors. I am looking at either 5k or 6k, I want White with just a hint of Blue. I have been looking on Ebay and I have seen kits from $35-$150 , but $35 seems way to cheap. I would like to know what brands you guys have and your experience with them and which ones to stay away from. All feedback is appreciated. Thanks

Question
1. Which is better for the SC - 35w or 55w?
2. Will I need to connect a relay to the battery?
3. What makes the lights flicker?
4. Standard ballast, Slim or Can-Bus?
5. AC or DC kit?
6. Which type of kit would you pick? and why?

1. For the SC, I recommend a 35w kit. Some 55w kits run too hot and can burn up your wiring.

2. You don't have to have a relay but I would recommend it, especially if you decide to go with a 55w kit.

3. Sometimes HID's will flicker if you buy a cheap kit or if you have a bad ballast or bulb. They can also flicker if they don't get enough power. That is where the relay would help.

4. A slim ballast would be fine. The slim ballast kits are usually more expensive though.

6. I would recommend a 6000k 35w kit since you want a hint of blue with your HID's. We've got a lot of vendors on here that sell HID kits pretty cheap. You may want to get a back up HID kit to keep in the car if you get one of the cheaper kits. The cheaper ones tend to go out a lot.

You mean as far as HID kit brands? Xenondepot makes some pretty good kits and I think they're in the $90-120 range. I used a kit from HIDextra on my SC300 and it was good. One of the ballast went out and they sent a replacement pretty fast. DDM Tuning's kits are under $50 and they seem to be decent. I've heard a lot of mixed reviews on them though. Mod-express and TspNY are good as well and in the $50 range.

The most reliable setup would be a Phillips HID kit. Those are in the $200 range though. I've never heard of anyone having trouble with those kits and they supposedly have the best light output. One of our vendors Nigel-JDMparts sells them. If you can afford it, go that route.

Definitely do not go with 55W HID kits. Many vendors that sell 55W HID kits simply use 50W ballasts with 35W bulbs. They end up overdriving the 35W bulbs which means that the bulbs will burn hotter and burn out quicker. A true 55W HID kit will get you approx 15% more light output than a 35W HID kit however they will produce more glare given that the size of the arc will be bigger. You will also find that the 55W kit will not have as even of a light spread as a 35W HID kit. If you are concerned about light output I would suggest not going above 5000k. A 5000k HID kit will get you a bright white output with a very slight bluish tone (more of a crisp white color). A relay harness will only be required if the ballasts do not have a low starting draw. XenonDepot HID kits use low draw ballasts meaning that as long as your vehicle's harness is able to supply a stable 12V you can safely power the ballasts without the use of a relay harness. An 55W HID kit that uses 55W ballasts and 55W HID Bulbs (not 35W) will not damage your vehicle, it will simply not be an effective upgrade given that there will be more glare and an uneven light spread.

I love the search feature... Thanx for posting this. I had a 55w hid kit installed on my non hid headlights... Lol yes i know... But recently did my own ls430 retrofit. I had some 55w bulbs in but they are 8000k. Super poor light. So now i am shooting for 5000k 35w but i plan to use the same ballasts. I searched to see if this is okay...the bulb wont last as long but it can be done. So im torn between phillips and garax and i refuse to ebay them although some have had luck.

I'm confused...

Do you have 55W ballasts or 35W ballasts? Are they D2S or D4S?

I actually have 55w ballasts and currently have some cheap ebay 55w 8000k d2s bulbs...

I want to change the bulbs to 35w 5000k or 6000k philips d2s bulbs but still use the same ballasts... so if i read that correctly... and its very possible i didn't... it seems like what i want to do can be done with the understanding that the bulbs lifespan will be shortened. Please chime in

Yes, the bulb lifespan will considerably be reduced. Furthermore, the bulbs will burn hotter which may potentially cause some damage. I would not recommend doing this.

Steve,
Yay first post! I have a question about halogen wattage output vs. HID wattage output. So my halogen H8/H11 fogs are 55w. I'm looking for the closest match to my Garax 35w 6K D4C lowbeams in OEM 35w HID projector housing. I'm looking at 5Ks for the H8/H11 fogs. Should I go with a 55w kit since the OEM replacement is 55w? Or should I get a 35w kit to minimize glare and/or heat?
