Factory Headlight specification for SC300/400:
65w for 9005
55w for 9006
I would not recommend exceeding +15w of the allowable specifications when subsituting 9006 for 9005.
OSRAM SYLVANIA Silverstars are rated as followed:
9005 - 1700 Lumnes +/-12% Max. 70w
9006 - 1000 Lumens +/-15% Max. 60w
The color temperature of OSRAM SYLVANIA SilverStar is comparable to Xenon bulbs and High Intensity Discharge (HID) headlights.
At white hot 4,000 deg. K, SilverStar is far higher than any other xenon bulb on the market.

not nearly as white as HID kits, but hard to see any yellow in it at all.
As far as the brightness, it's not that impressive, but bright enough to get me through the night.
This bulb is supposedly stree illegal for some reason, which makes me like it even more.

Has anyone tried or compared the Philips "Blue Vision" (they are "white" bulbs, not Rice blue) ?
My J Spec car has the uncapped Blue Vision 9005's fitted in the main and dipped h/lamps, fantastic improvement over the factory bulbs but I feel the light cut-off is not so good on the dips and have to keep my beams low to prevent causing offence or being dangerous.
Both inner & outer lamps take the 9005 fittment and yet many application charts quote 9006 for the outer (dip) beams, I did originally get the 9006 bulbs but the base was 2mm too fat to fit in the holder, I did see someone mention "rare J spec 9006" bulbs, any more info available?
Do I presume correctly that the US spec h/lamps take 9006 bulbs in the dipped beam and 9005 in the inner main beams BUT the bulbs are interchangable and have the same P20d mounting (20m Diameter)?

I just tried this mod on my 93 SC300. In addition to removing the 2 grooves inside the harness, I had to clip half of one of the 3 tabs on the bulb harness before it would fit.

We are now using PIAA Platinum bulbs for the dip (outer) headlamp. 55w draw with 110w output (they dont cook the wiring loom), these are Capped 9005J fitment requiring no modifications (note the "J" designation).
The beam is very strong and pure white @ 3950k which is not in the HID range despite the HID markings on the package, probably says "HID like" in Japanese.
As required for correct dip beam pattern these bulbs are "capped" (the forward portion of the bulb has a matt grey covering), if you fit uncapped bulbs in the projector lens the beam pattern gets screwed which is why the HID bulb kits do not give a good pattern.
So a perfect "plug & play" solution, the only issue is the price! We cannot buy direct from PIAA unless we spend £4,000 per order so we have to get them from a distributor, our cost is over $90 for each bulb, expensive yes, but they are the best this side of a HID retro-fit.

WARNING. DO NOT DO THIS.
Ok guys here is my story. I did what you guys descibed above about 6 months ago and trust me you do not want to do this. i even went a step further before installing the bulbs and bought a heavy duty upgrade wire harness kit from www.suvlights.com and it had a relay and fuse and everything. it worked great for about 2 months using a 80watt bulb after that my driver side wire was melted down to the wires and the base of the connector was totally melted. the passenger side same condition but not as bad yet. DO NOT DO THIS. its not worth it. the little cap on the tip of the 9006 bulb is to control the light for a reason. also on 9006/9005 bulbs the filaments are parrellel to the bulb anyways which means that the light come out the side of the bulb not the tip. i attach a picture to show you what i mean
trust me i have tried it all. i have bought over 20 pairs of fake HID bulbs and tried everything for better light. but nothing is compared to a real HID retrofit. even a HID kit is not as good as a retro fit.

I don't want to sound like "Captain Know It All" but I have a 2012 chevy Colorado 9005 (hi beam) 9006 (lo beam) 9045 (fog) . OK. stay with me the 9045 is actually a low wattage 9006 (lo beam) so a 9006 will fit into fog. Now the 9006 will not fit into the 9005 because the 9005 hole is to small but 9005 will fit in 9006 if you cut the little plastic tabs in the socket. That being said 9005 will fit the fog and that's what I'm running. Yes 6 hi beam bulbs on the front of my truck & they are leds from auxito. They currently have been in there going on 2 1/2 yrs now with no melting of wires or any other issues. I have even wired up additional relay to my lo beam (actually a hi beam bulb) into the hi beam so that the lo stays on when the hi is ingauged the fogs I rewired to its own toggle because its the only way to keep the fogs on with highs now I don't know if it is because I paid high dollar for these bulbs but as I said before been like this for a while, February of 2024 will be 2 1/2 yrs.
Do they still make these bulbs? 😂
