Default Question for Rominl regarding DIY article on HID installation

Hi Rominil,

I just read your DIY on the HID install in the low beam on the GS. Awesome article! Very well done!

I have a question regarding doing the exact same install with one important difference - I will be doing it in my fogs.

I noticed that the HID bulb is significantly longer than the standard 9006 bulb and I can see this posing a problem as there is a metal cover inside the fog lamp housing that more or less covers the fog light bulb.

How can I remove this metal cover or will it be ok (size wise) for the HID bulb to fit in the housing? If I am not making myself clear, please ask.

Also, what do you think I should do - just put in the 4100K HID in fogs as opposed to the 6000K since my OEM low beams are already 4100K HID's? Do you think it will look weird if I install the 6000K HID's in my fogs? How significantly different is the color of the 6000K's compared to the 4100K's? I don't want my car to look ricer in any way at all...............

wow, my big name

anyway. i believe the hid bulb will fit right in. bluelex already has hid in his fogs and i think it's just direct swap. i know what you mean by the metal piece but i think there are still enough clearance. i have yet to get time to install the hid kits i have on my gs4 fogs

if you already have 4100k hid on low beam, stay with 4100k on your fogs. i assume you have clear fogs right? doing 4100k headlight and then 6000k fogs would be extremely weird. 6000k is a lot whiter and "bluer" than 4100k, if you do that people would be like "wha?! this car has his low beam and fogs reversed?"

Thanks Henry! I needed to get someone else's perspective on that choice of HID!!

I have placed an order with Jason for the 4100K, but he is temporarily out for 2 weeks. One other possibility is to buy the 6000K for the fogs and then wait till I can afford to replace the 4100K bulbs in low beams with 6000K and then do both installs at the same time. What do you think of that idea?

I am assuming that the 6000K bulb can be bought on its own and installed in the current system replacing the 4100K? Let me know if my assumption is correct.

TIA

If I had a choice, I would go with 6000K for both low-beam and fogs. That will look SWEET!!

i suppose you already have hid stock right? a new set of philips 6000k ultinion is 250 shipped last time i check from my guy (not jason, another guy). he's in taiwan but a lot of people (even on clublexus) have bought from him.

imho, if you can, of course do 6000k headlight and fogs, that would be sick i can assure you. but if you dohn't really plan on upgrading the headlight to 6000k, then stay with 4100k on the fogs as well. BUT if you are so tempted to change the headlight sooner or later, then the 6000k hid on the fogs would be a very good excuse to change out your headlight very soon

Thanks for your input Henry!

I think that is what I will do, do 6000K in the fogs and low beams. Can you tell me your contact in Taiwan for the bulbs? I will do that in another couple of weeks.

Henry,

I just got an email from Jason, and he also sells the D2R Philips Ultinon bulbs for about $200.00!
