Default tail light bulbs

Does anyone know what the difference between an 1157 and a 1156 bulb is? Can you use and 1157 where an 1156 is to be used?

thanks!

1157 has 2 filaments and is generally used for brake lights, whereas 1156 has 1 filament and is used for turn signals. They are not interchangeable because the 1157 has 2 connectors and the 1156 1.
