Default Tire Load

Hello all, I'm in the process of shopping for tires and tire load is delaying the process a bit. I have wheels from a GS460 18x8. My problem is I don't want such a meaty tire leading me to 215/35r18 which are rated for a tire load of 84 or 1100 lbs. Gross weight of 2000 LS400 is 4900. How serious should I take tire load? Will my tire blow up on the freeway if I have 5 adults in the car ;(

215? That's a pretty stretched tire for a 8'' rim, that's the absolute minimum width. You won't have much sidewall protection, you should ideally be on 225 or 235 on an 8 inch rim.

With a fully loaded car, yes, you would be overloading the tire and are relying on the built-in safety margin from the tire manufacturer to not cause damage or detonation of the tire. Combine this with an over-stretched tire and yeah, I think it's a dangerous situation.

Will it blow out on day 3? Probably not. But fast forward 4 years, you've forgotten about this, the tire pressure is a little low resulting in more heat, you go through a few corners making them even hotter, all of this on a particularly hot day and that is precisely how you end up on someone's dash cam, on Youtube, pirouetting down the highway. The safety margin is there so that these things can stack up and you remain safe.

I don’t have a fitment guide handy but you need to get access to a load chart. You take the oem tire and air pressure and it will give you the weight the tire can support. Now take the tire you are buying and see if it can be inflated to an air pressure that will match the OE load spec

Other option is to find another tire from another brand which is beefier. Toyo will be different from Great Wall which will be different from Michelin.

After many warning me of how serious tire load is I just decided I’m going to get 225/40 and tuck em. Prob gonna have to do some rolling and what not, but better than blowing up my quarter panel while having a full car👍

tire rating is not only weight holding capability but speed holding. a tire may hold the weight but cannot for long periods of time at high speed. tires are rated for your safety (and others you share the road with) so please stick to them!

why don't you want a meaty tire? for looks? what year GS wheels do you have (there is no GS460)? did you mean GS430? GS350?

Yeah, I initially was set on 215/35 because I saw others running that exact setup, but now after talking to them, they didn't even know how dangerous their tire load is. I wanted a thinner sidewall than 225/40 and it's near impossible to get 225/35 for a reasonable price.

I bought the wheels on FB from an older couple that didn't know anything about them. I googled the specs and shape, google and eBay say they're off a GS350 or GS460. I think they're nicknamed fan blades.

I'm pretty sure the OEM fitment for those rims is 245\45\18. That size is a far, far, FAR more common tire size and finding rubber will be substantially easier\cheaper. Bonus points: that size also means the speedo is accurate, as it's within 1% of the stock OD. I'm not really sure why you'd run such a smaller tire on those rims unless you need those fractions of an inch to clear a car which is substantially lowered, then I can understand.

P.S those are indeed GS 460 rims, and there was a GS460.

The reason Ebay says all that **** is because the rims fit on all of those other cars b\c shared bolt pattern.

Well, you've basically figured me out. I am planning on going decently low, been a dream to have a "stance" car since I was a kid. Since I'm still young and dumb there's really no better time than the present to achieve that dream. LS really stands for LowSlow

Interesting stuff, I like these chrome 460 wheels more than the common chrome 430 wheels people often run on their LS. Surprised more people don't run them.

Meh I tried the big wheels. The ride quality sacrifice was unacceptable to me. I spend enough time in low slung sports cars, I want a comfortable boat.

wow i type corrected...i must be living under a rock! i knew v8 GSs existed but thought only up to the 4.3 not the 4.6! pretty cool.

back on subject, that stance life = compromises so keep that in mind. i've lived that life and usually it was only myself and 1 other person in the car at a time so tire loading didn't matter too much. enjoy but be safe; for yourself and others!
