Troubles with 1992 ls400
So, I'm new here but I recently got a ls400. And I was hoping to get some insight on what might be wrong with it. The first issue which I think is unrelated but just incase is that the transmission doesn't work. I can put it into gear and the rpms change but it doesn't go anywhere. The second is that it doesn't stay started. Most of the time I'll start it and within a minute it'll die out. If I hold it at around 3k rpms I can keep it going and it will stop trying to die but if I try to give it gas once it starts it does nothing. Once I have started it and it continued to run for 10-15 minutes with no issue before I turned it off. The previous owner had it since January and he got it with the transmission issue so it's been sitting since at least then and it's got 3/4ths a tank. But I'm hesitant to say it's a fuel issue with the nature of it. Any help would be nice.

- Mileage?
- Did you buy the car with these issues present?
- Scan for trouble codes?
- Check engine light on or off?
- What's the ATF situation? Does it read on the dipstick? Color?
- Remove the fuel tank cap and give it a sniff. Does it smell like turpentine?

All issues were present when I got the car
Will scanning for codes do anything if there is no check engine light?
Transmission fluid is full and Red.
What does turpentine smell like?
