Need help for installing a Power steering pump
Hey guys,
My cousin has a 1994 LS400 and needs to replace the power steering unit. The Lexus dealer quoted him almost $ 1500.00. and an independent mechanics quoted him $ 800.00 .(parts+labor).
So he decided to do it himself and I volunteer to help him out this weekend.
We bought the power steering High pressure hose from the PartsBin.com for $136.38 plus $ 18.00 for next day shipping (Thank you for other CL members who had posted the link ) and he located a shop that sells a rebuild power steering pump for $140.00 .
I had worked on my 1998 LS 400 to replace the timing belt and some other minor engine maintenance, but I haven't tried to replace the power steering unit yet. However, I wanna give it a try on my cousin's LS. It will be a good learning experience.
So, is it an easy thing to do?
I have searched the threads, but I couldn't find any posts that discussed the steps.
I appreciate for your help.
Thank you,
~ Dom ~

Parts required (suggested)
Pump with reservoir.
Pressure hose with copper crush washers.
2 feet of return hose (3/8).Will be cut to size later.
6 ft. section of (cheap) 3/8 hose for flushing the system (2 small hose clamp).
3 quarts power steering fluid (Dextron II compatible).
2 small cable ties to tie down alternator wiring.
Tools
Metric, open end and box wrenches and sockets
Disconnect battery
Jack front wheels off ground
Remove plastic windshield under car and 2 side shields
Drain radiator
Remove air filter and duct
Loosen nut on power steering pump pulley
Remove radiator hose on power steering pump side
Disconnect vacuum hoses from power steering idle up valve
Disconnect pressure hose near the steering rack to drain fluid from pump reservoir
Cut off return hose. (replace with new 3/8 hose) from rack
Remove serpentine belt. (make a drawing of how the belt routes) if not on a decal under hood.
Remove the bolts at each end of the sway bar in each wheel well
Remove bolts clamping the pressure hose to the chassis
Disconnect wiring from alternator (1 connector, 1output cable)
Remove alternator through the bottom. (2 bolts) (rotate sway bar as necessary)
Disconnect Pressure hose from pump and remove
Remove 3 bolts on steering pump from the bottom
Cut off return hose at reservoir. (replace with new 3/8 hose later)
Remove 1 nut on a stud from the top through a hole in the steering pump pulley
If you can remove the pump pulley first, the pump can be removed through to top
If not remove through the bottom.
Remove idle up valve from pump and pulley if not already removed.
Re installation of Power steering pump
Suggest that new pump has a new reservoir already installed.
( The reservoir had a fine mesh screen in the bottom that gets clogged from the breakdown of the pressure hose. If you are confident that you have flushed it completely and want to reuse it, make sure the O-ring is replaced at the base of the reservoir before reassembly)
Reinstall idle up valve on pump body.(or install a plug if you chose to disable this function)(this valve is known to fail resulting in power steering fluid being sucked in the intake manifold causing smoke at startup)
Install new pump through the top without the pulley.
Install alternator and all electrical connections. (make sure multi connector seats fully)
Install pressure hose using new copper compression washers.
Install new return hose near rack if not already done.
Reinstall pressure hose tie down brackets.
Reconnect sway bar.
Cap reservoir return port.
Install 6 ft length of hose to return tubing from the rack near the pump.
(this will be use to bleed and flush the system)(lead to a 2 gal bucket)
Install pulley. (tighten the nut after the belt is re routed)
Re route the serpentine belt. (check torque on steering pump pulley )
Fill steering reservoir and put the end of the 6 ft. length of hose in a bucket.
Turn the wheel stop to stop and observe dirty fluid is pumped to the bucket.
Refill reservoir as necessary until fluid going to the bucket is clear.
Allow fluid level to drop below the return port and install 3/8 return hose after removing 6 ft. section.
Reconnect radiator hoses and refill with antifreeze.(check for leaks)
Reconnect the battery
Fill the reservoir and install the cap (If you don't, air in the return will foam and over flow the reservoir). Start the engine and turn wheel left to right several times to purge any remaining air from the system.
Re-service the reservoir to the proper level.
Check for leaks (fix as required)
Reinstall air duct and other plastic cowling
Test drive.
Check for leaks. (fix as required)
Check all fluid levels.
Reinstall bottom windshields.
Clean up and have a well-deserved beverage!

Do you have a digital camera? If you do could you write up a tutorial....this would be a good one for my LS site. Since it is a common part that needs replacement it would be excellent to have this. Good luck .

Excellent . It would definitely be useful to others. Here's the main thing I'm looking for....good pictures. Please take lot's of pictures so the blurry ones can be deleted. I always take tons to find the best. Also, I take all my pics at a high resolution and then resize them to 640x480. If you take your pics at a high resolution I can resize them. Send me a PM when you're ready. Good luck and thanks again.

LS400DOM - I am also sending you a procedure to your e-mail on removal & installation of P/S Pump & procedure for refilling & bleeding the P/S pump properly when you change out.
Very important you bleed properly & do not get air in P/S System otherwise it will be very hard to turn wheel.
page SR100 steps 2 thru 8 are for replacement of power steering fluid
page SR100 ( at bottom ) to page SR101 steps 1 thru 3 are for bleeding of powere steering system.
page SR 104 & SR 105 - Removal & Installation of Power Steering Pump.
These instructions are from my '92 LS-400 Factory Service Manual. Should be the same for your year that you are working on.
Good luck & hope these pages help you & your cousin.
The best money you can ever spend on your Lexus will be for a set of factory service manuals for your specific year & make. Trust me on this one. Well worth the money. Alot of good information in them & they are laid out real nice. Lexus did a great job putting these manuals together.... Can be purchased from dealer "stealer"( uurgh )...or E-Bay....or www.lexus-parts.com ( best choice )

Make sure you clean the solenoid on the left side of the steering rack too. If the screen in the solenoid clogged up, your steering wheel will hard to turn). Here's the link by Herm about the PS pump.

LS400DOM - remember to fill the power steering pump with ATF Dexron III or IV - whatever his owners manual says for a '95. Do not use power steering fluid. I have seen many threads here where people used p/s fluid & their steering became very hard afterwards.
