90 LS400 vs 94 ES300
With the (small) amount of $$ I have to spend, it seems the only thing within my price range is an older LS400 or a slightly newer ES300. It sucks because the '93 LS400 seems to be the 'sweet spot' but all of the good examples of them are priced out of my range.

Hah..this topic hits close to home.
Both are excellent vehicles. Consider mileage and any maintenance information available when comparing the two cars. Outside appearance rarely means anything when judging the mechanical stability of a car.
The ES is definetly a fun car. It's a bit smaller and handles easier than the LS. It's not bad for long drives either. It's pretty punchy off the line if you're thinking about the speed factor.
The LS shares a different platform and is much more 'tank-like.' It's a good cruiser car with a 'torquey' engine, but isn't exactly sporty. 1990 was the first year and let's just say many things were fixed and improved on in later models.
Try driving both of them and maybe look around on the forums a bit more. Good luck.

Man they are really two completely different cars. both very reliable. its really up to u, and what kind of car u want. the LS is more of a big body luxury car, with a powerful 4 liter V8 non interferance engine and plenty of leg room. the es is more like a toyota camary, with high end options, 6 cylinder engine, an economy luxery sedan, not much performace, but very classy. Also the older Ls are still very reliable, just check any of your consumer reports and such as all the LS models are at the top in reliability. Another thing is unless u are familier with Lexus cars most ordinary people can't tell what year your car is because the body has changed little from 90 to 99. i have a 92 LS with 99 stock LS rims. and no one believes its a 92. good luck

Like the old Mercedeses, all LS (I do not know about about the latest) have been "built to a spec and not to a price". They are practically bullet-proof. The ES is an upgraded Camry.
In safety, performance, quality, size and fun (RWD), the LS wins. However, if you want a very well built and more economical highway cruiser and if you plan to drive in snow without snow tires, then the ES is probably a wiser choice.
