Timing belt question
Can you please answer this?
Would a 90 LS400 with 75K miles need a timing belt replacement??
I've never heard of a Lexus with under 90K needing to have a t-belt replaced.
My mechanic says its because the car is 14 years old. Does age have more to do with this part failing than mileage?
Thoughts??

I would say probibly not however he has a good point that it is so old. An easy thing to do is remove the dirver side spark plug cover, the one which says FOUR CAM 32. you can then see part of the belt that loops around the cam gear, maybe that will help in deciding if it needs to be changed.

This car at 75K has been Lexus serviced every 4k miles since new. Never missed one and did all preventive maintenace , aircon retro to 134R, even had a $ 400 Lexus battery replacement six months ago!

Yikes! If you have no problem shelling out $400 for a battery, you won't mind the $1000 or so a stealership will charge for a timing belt change!
sniper's right - take a look at the belt before doing anything. When I checked the belt on my 92, it looked great. The chances of it breaking are very, very slim. There are only a handful of posts out there mentioning that their belts broke, but many more posts of belts lasting 120,000 miles or more.
If the belt breaks your engine won't be harmed but will stop running and you'll need a tow, so join AAA. At $55/year, you can belong to AAA for 19 years for the cost of one (probably) unnecessary timing belt change.

I am in the Toronto Ontario area and the local dealer recommends changing the timing belt at 90000 KMS or only 56000 miles!!
My '93 had it done at 89000km's (before I bought it) so they likely swapped out a "like new" belt..... I'm glad I checked here to see that these belts last for a lot longer than the local dealer told me - My odometer is now at 183000kms so I was anticipating another belt service soon but based on this it looks like I have another 40K kms to go at least - great!
