car height and tire size
Hello. I am brand new to the site as I was just today told about it. If I had known last week, you guys might have been to save me some work. I have a '93 LS400 with 92K miles. I got the car back in 2000
with BBS gold mesh (the car is beige) German wheels on it. The offset on these wheels is 35, and, as
of late, I have noticed that the tires (225/60/16) are almost even with the outside line of the car. I would
like to know the offset of factory wheels for my year. Are the wheels and tires not supposed to sit a little
farther back inside the wheelwells? Also I noted that the car was almost down to the top of the tires.
This combination made the tires look very large, and it made the car appear to be very heavy and
squatting down on the tires. Lexus told me that they very seldom have to replace springs; is that really
correct? To save bucks, I found a wrecked '94 that still measured almost the correct factory height
(10.8 inches in front and 10 inches in the rear) and installed them. They did help a lot, but those big
tires and outboard wheels still look too big. If the wheels weren't such good quality, I would just re-
place them if the offsets are too much to endure. I think I will go to a size smaller tire and perhaps
try an additional compression of the springs by adding some spacers that I will manufacture for the
springs to sit on. I would hope that a 1 3/4 inch spacer would lift the car enough to give me between
3 and 4 inches clearance between the top of the tire and the wheelwell. I'm hoping that much
clearance combined with a 215 size tire might get rid of the massive look of those 225s. (I do have
some pictures of a car that was recently on eBay that has the appearance that I am gunning for, and
it really does look light on its feet). So, send comments along with that factory offset number. Thanks
