Cluster needles and guages
I have a '93 LS400 and have experienced tach and speedo needles only coming to life when they wanted
to (but when they did, they worked perfectly), the speedo needle going black, background lighting not
lighting up, and the fuel needle working eradically. I bought a used '94 cluster, replaced the dark speedo
module, and the two big guages worked fine for awhile. It was with the replacement cluster than the
backlight failed and the fuel guage got quirky. I decided to swap the small circuit boards (as I was told
that is where the mileage is stored. This is true.) and the backlight went away. I decided to away out
the fuel needle module (as my old one had always worked perfectly), but doint so didn't work. My old
fuel module now works exactly like the one I replaced. I even tried replaced the sending unit in the gas
tank. All of the previous material was given to set up my real question: What actually governs how well
the fuel guage works? I am mystified that two modules could both work so eradically unless the pro-
blem is outside the needle module itself. What do you guys think? There is a commercial business
in Houston that works on them, but I get the idea that they might be more into replacement than repair,
and that always costs more.

I would suggest that you contact Jim Walker at jimlwalker@sbcglobal.net.
Jim repaired the cluster in my 93 LS 400 last December. It had the usual problem of not lighting when the weather was cool. Also, I had two needles that were losing their illumination.
He has a pinned thread on the Lexus Owners Club Forum regarding the cluster problems.
He did a very quick fix on mine at a very reasonable cost.
