Do i have a problem? New LS400 owner.
Hello people. I must commend you all for a great forum.
I bought the LS 400 three months ago and it has been superb with no problem at all. Though its a 92 model with 203000 miles it looks and drives like new inside out. My only problem is that i believe its taking too much fuel. I get about 225 miles from a full tank in nner city driving. Is that about right do you get more? I saw some old thread s where people were saying they get between 350-400 miles from their tank. I have done an A service recently with no luck.
Another thing which bothers my mind is the tyre air pressure. The owner manual says 32,34 psi i believe. But a local tire shop told me its 34,36 psi. Some people mentioned that they put theirs between 36-40 to save fuel. How much do you guys put yours.
One last thing guys. I am thinking about tinting the windows excluding the front windscreen but was told by someone that tinting the front side windows is against the law. I have seen many cars tint thier front side windows hence was wondering if the police ever stop cars with them.
Apart from these, the car is awesome. Lexus has won me over and i don't think i'll ever buy any other make again. Talk about smoothness, quality and quietness. The LS must be the best kept secret in the car industry.

225 miles per tank city driving is a bit low. You should be getting more like 275-300 per tank .
Tires......keep them at 32psi all around.
In New York you're allowed to tint the windows as follows....
70% front drivers & pass.
70% rear drivers & pass.
Back window... ANY%...limo tint is fine.
Windshield ....you're allowed to go 6" down as a visor
The % means the amount of light transmittance. Most folks don't follow these regulations but that's NYS law.

Welcome the forums talkit....
225 miles local on a full tank is definitely not right. Even with aggressive driving habits, you should get at least 250-275. Did you check and see if the intake filter needs replacing? Replacing a dirty air filter will give you some extra mileage, but I highly doubt that is the main reason why you're getting such low miles per tank.
Regarding tire pressure, what you have heard from others is correct...having low pressure in your tires will result in a decrease in gas mileage, which is why some people go a bit higher than what is recommended to save on gas. The downside to this is a slightly harsher ride that you might not even notice and possibly some uneven tire wear.
As for tint regulations in the state of NY (according to what NoS posted in this thread: https://www.clublexus.com/forums/sho...hreadid=136258 )
STATE - NY
FRONT SIDES - 70%
REAR SIDES - 70%
BACK - ANY%
WINDOW VISOR - 6"
NET/FILM - NET
Edit: Argh, you beat me to it Sharp.

Given your car's age and mileage, 225 miles on a full tank doesn't sound too bad for New York inner city driving. I get about 260 miles on a full tank in my 99 with 115,000. I commute everyday between Queens and Manhattan. In the stop and go traffic, I drive at an average speed of 19mph and squeeze out 17mpg.

Depending how much sitting you do, this could be typical, I've had lows of 12 MPG in heavy crawling traffic.
Tire pressure, experiment. The Michelins on mine loose grip above 37 PSI, I keep mine at 34-35 typically.

225 miles sounds correct for a 92, inner city. Anyway, inner city driving is NOT a good judge for the condition of your car, as driving conditions like traffic and weather can change from day to day. My inner city conditions are TOTALLY different from yours. Many hills, constant stop and go, always raining, a lot of idling, max speed limit in city is 40 mph. Everyones conditions are different. Never compare inner city driving between yourself and another poster.
Try the highway route. Go for a good long distance run of about 400 miles on less trafficed highways. You should expect 25 mpg on highway. If not, then consider changing spark plugs, air filter, add fuel system cleaner, change fuel filter. I keep my tires 32 front, 34 rear for ideal handling, ride comfort, and gas mileage, with NO uneven wear. Mind you, I also have a plus zero size 225/60-15 tyres.
Having said that, I get 9 mpg inner city. I also get 25 mpg highway at a constant 75 mph.

how big is the tank. if it's about 20 gallons, you are probably ok with 225 miles in the city. when I drive my LS430 around town here in Brooklyn, I don't drive easy, so I get about 15mpg with city only driving. Giving your car's milage and age, I think you got nothing to worry about. What I would do is change the air filter or make sure the one you have is clean. Tune the car up with new OEM only spark plugs. If you haven't changed the plugs, make sure you use OEM plugs. Keep tire pressure to what the manual says or about 1 lb more. make sure you take tire pressure on cold tires in the morning. Also, if you garage your car and the carage is heated, the tire pressure will fall when you go outdoors if it is colder outside. I had a 96 LS400 I was getting about 20mpg highway and 15mpg city. But, I am not an easy driver. I had my friend drive my car once because I was tired, he got 23mpg, becuase he's driving style differs from mine just a bit. So as you see, there are too many factors the gas milage depends on. And I assume you use premium gas only, right? Also, may be next time you do oil change, put Mobile1 synthetic oil with OEM oil filter or Denso oil filter. See if that makes a difference. Use same grade Mobile1 as you do with conventional oil. good luck.
