Default OH NO! p/s problems with my 1990 LS400

Ok,

So i dropped it off to get a checkup, and im told that the p/s pump/pressure hose/steering rack
are all leaking and that the parts would be 1200$ and labor 500$...i looked the parts up online and i found them all for about 700$
was wondering if anyone has ever replaced all of these and how difficult it would be because i do have access to a garage and tools...all im lacking is the book...

thanks for your help again!

Download the book from TIS (Toyota info): http://www.lexls.com/repairmanual.html

Yes, a leaking PS pump is a very common problem. Basically, the seals inside the pump deteriorate over time and need to be replaced. You, or your mechanic needs to rebuild the pump. They make a rebuild kit with all the gaskets you need for $25 or so, a new bearing is about $10. I'm getting ready for a PS pump rebuild myself....

what about the hose and the steering rack? to answer the other question, i have not seen them all leaking no i do not know exactly where to look, i do know they are leaking, i leave wet spots, and it smokes when i start it after sitting for a few hours from the leaked fluid burning up...also it dried up completly a week ago and i had to refill it...they told me the pressure hose and the steering rack also need replacing though also, i looked up instructions on how to rebuild the pump and i figured i would do that but im not sure if i need to buy the hose and the steering rack also, im thinking about taking it to a couple more places to see if they say the same thing.
any more advice would be greatly appreciated

THANKS AGAIN!

It is definitely possible that all three need to be replaced. I had a leaky steering rack myself and had my mechanic replace it. The pressure hose is probably just a good thing to replace because it too may be leaking.

I think you should just bite the bullet and get it all fixed........
