Hi guys. I currently own a 97 maxima, but LS400 is my all time favorite car. Well, too bad i can't afford one for a couple more years. Anyhow, i did some sound deadening on my max to make it a little quieter, but obvisously it still not a lexus. I was wondering about what does lexus do to their cars to make them so darn quiet? Thanks a lot.
BTW, here is my homepage will all my install pics.

sand
A stereo guy says the fenders are filled with sand to keep the noise down from the cabin.I am not sure if I believe it.To run a wire from my headunit to the rear cargo, he claims would be tough and he may have to go through the fenders since they are all filled with sand.
This weekend I also found double rubber seals on the passenger door trim(for rain) and I guess this will reduce noise.

He doesn't know crap!
I ran a 2 gauge within the LS4 with no problems.
As for the sound detoning, I honest really don't know but I do know my car doesn't rattle at all with all the new stereo install done to it.
The only that rattles is the license plate but that shall be fixed.

Sand would make a poor sound deadener on a car for MANY reasons. Not the least being it is heavy and would shift and would pocket and service nightmare and etc, etc...
Quiet comes from many areas. NVH (noise vibration and harshness) engineering is like any other engineering science and addresses things like vibration rates and deflection, materials and assembly. Bottom line, Lexus takes the time and spends the money necessary to produce an amazingly quiet car. If you drive an ES back to back with an LS you will notice the more expensive LS is MUCH quieter and smoother. Of course an ES seems very quiet and smooth to a lesser car owner

In the new Mobile Entertainment Mag there is a GS install and it mentions how thick the carpet is..also I've heard the motor mounts are top notch, as well as the glass being better than most. These could be a few layman's reasons for the quietness, along with the other reasons mentioned..except the beach theory!!!

Well a lot of it is the engine, the superb engineering done there makes for silent operation. Also very close detail is paid to all of the suspension and body mounting points to reduce noise. There is a lot, and I mean a LOT of sound deadening also. Thick glass plays a big part too. Notice that 98+ LS400s are a good bit quieter (2-3 decibels) because the windshield is thicker, 3 times thicker than standard glass.
In my opinion no one builds as quiet a car.

I agree to most of the above replies, as far as thicker carpet, especially the LS model and the engine and transmission mounts as well as top quality glass used throughout the vehicle. One of the biggest reasons why they are so quiet, especially the new models is that the sheetmetal/steel used in constructing the car is called "sandwich metal" there is a layer of metal then insulating material, then metal, then insulating material and so on and so on. Ultra absorbing. The foam and attention to fastners on trim parts and pieces has increased year to year, it keeps getting better!

What Makes A Lexus So Quiet???
tt
The bulkheads of the Lexus LS400/430 are coated with a special residue from a rubber tree
in Malayasia. Furthermore the under side is covered with a flat sheet of steel.
Then, every join and hinge is oiled. Also, wind and tire noise are reduced by the pattern of
the tire beng compartible to numerous tests for suitability.
Lastly, every Lexus is driven over a rough track at Tahara, and the last little squeaks and rattles
ironed out until there is no noise left. Some Lexus cars also have double window glass as an option.

Everythough its old, its still an intresting topic. I realized that for the last couple of weeks nothing really exiciting has been going on in this forum. Maybe everyone's just excited about the new LS460. =)
As for being quite...I'll tell you what makes the LS not smooth and quiet........20" Rims and a Subwoofer. My car is no where as smooth and quite as it was before the two. Its still not bad, but I can definetely notice some rattles.

To make your car very quiet, it will cost you but, do the whole engine compartment and the whole cabin with this stuff, you'll hear a big difference. I knew someone who had an Ford Escort, He did his whole car with that stuff (cost him like $3K at the time), it was so quiet, I thought I was in my lexus....I was very impressed
