I'm glad I found this place...I have a few questions

Is there any way to modify the engine to give it more power?

I have been given a 1993 ls-400 with about 170,000 miles...

Some options of upgrading the car:

Adding after market headunit (prob alpine)...

So far, we are using the factory headunit + 4 speakers that run into a 2 channel performance tekniq amp into 2 JL's.

Is it a good idea to rip out the back seats and install the box there cuz there is a gas tank between the trunk and the inside of the car?

What are your opinions on using free-air subs (placed on top of the back area, behind the rearseats, facing up?)

Also, what kind of rims do you recommend? Size and width? I was thinking of going with one of the LS sportsline 20" rims and a good set of tires...but how long do the tires last?

thanks a bunch

Welcome static911,if your looking for mods for power, the only two things you could do is an intake and a exhausts.

look at the thread new exhausts below.

You could take the factory air box and put an adapter with a open air intake to draw in more power plus you could put a heat shield in fort of it.

170,000 is still not that much for a Lexus car they have been known to go past 300,000 and counting and still run better than some new american cars.

As for the subs, yes my back seats need to be taken out so wires can run thru.

Keep looking in this site for other interesting things to do for the LS.

Also as i forgot to mention static911,you once your JL's and hooked up,you should disconnect your factory sub in the back and take it out.If not the trunk is pretty well sealed and you might loss some thump, taking the factory sub allows air flow to go thru!

Looks like you a one of the few LS mod heads.

I better say something before Josh sees this and calls me out.

Welcome to ClubLexus.
Edogg has a lot of good pointers, I'm just here to add some more.

Engine mod:
- There is the basic air intake switch. You could either buy one from RMM for about $250 http://www.rodmillen.com/ and 5-10 HP gain, you can build your own with a adapter and cone air filter for less then $100 (similar to the RMM but you don't get the ram air adapter that supposedly increase HP for another 2-3 HP ), or you could wait and get the SRT HFI that is in the making which has a ECU switch with the air intake for a estimate of 20 HP gain.
- You could also get a exhaust for the car. Borla makes one and it will cost you around $550, HKS is in the makings of one and $$$$ is unknown but expect around $900 for it, and everything else must be imported from Japan where the LS is called a Celsior.
- There is also the SRT torque convertor http://www.swiftracing.com/ for increase acceleration for around $950.
- You could also switch out the spark plugs and wires with NGK platinuims plugs ($7 each) and Magnecore silicon wires ($300).
- A 94-98 Supra strut bar is known to fit the LS with several washers added for height ($40-$200).
- You could also drop your car several inches for increase handling and ride feel. Intrax makes a 1.75" drop and Eibach makes a 1" drop for about $250 for all four. Tokico and Bilestein makes shocks for around $90 each. You could go all out and get Tein Ha coilovers for about $1800.
- You could also increase the brakes to RMM kit ($950), Brembo kit ($2000-$3000), or the AP kit ($3000-$4500).
- Then there is a super charger for the car that will cost you a whoopin $7000!
- The wheels you have choosen sounds great! I would get 20x8.5 with offset of 40-45 in front and 20x9.5 with offset of 40-45 for the rear. With 20" your going to have to be carefull with potholes. I recommend getting either the Toyo or Nitto tires. They have the best ride and last the longest from what I heard. With 20" rims the tires should last about 10,000-15,000 miles.

Stereo:
- The Lexus is a tad harder for a install then other cars in that there is no aftermarket wire harness for the car. You must figure out the wires and splice and soldier the wires. Also there is no aftermarket face plate either except for one but it is aluminuim and not wood http://store.autotoys.com/cgi-bin/wfp53024.storefront From there it is a simple stereo install.
- The gas tank can easily be maneuvered by using a ported sub and porting the sound from the box to the removed factory free air sub hole. I use to have two 12" JL W3 ported this way and it thumped plenty hard!
- Remove the factory amp because it is weak and you don't need it if your running amps to all 4" interior speakers and a amp to the sub.
- Wiring isn't hard either. I'm right now running a 2 gauge from battery to trunk through the interior with no problems.
- I don't recommend getting a free air sub unless you like how the stock subs sounds right now.

Umh.... I think I covered most of everthing. If you have any other questions just holler.
