Radar Detectors

I'm one of many who loves the V-1. I would have never spent the money on it myself, but someone gave me a V-1 as a gift a couple years ago. I'd owned and/or used some of the other high-rated brands over the years, and had been satisfied with them. I'd always heard generally positive things about the V-1, but also read the comparison tests claiming that the lower priced units would get the job done just about as well. However, after using the V-1 for about 100 miles, I was a big believer, and now I would never buy anything else unless I absolutely didn't have the money to get a V-1. Most of the tests and comparisons don't go into the detail to let you know the real advantage of the V-1 (I've never understood why they don't). Instead, they talk about sensitivity and how many feet or miles away the detector can pick up the signal. Sensitivity is NOT the important factor with a detector. Any half-decent detector nowadays will have PLENTY of range, but there is no need to have a detector that will pick up a signal 5 miles away, unless it can also tell you what the level of threat is. In fact, that's a disadvantage. Therefore, the huge advantage of the V-1 is not in its sensitivity. Instead, it's in the combination of information that it gives you to enable you to quickly determine if a 'beep' is actually a cop, and if the cop is in position to clock you. If you spend a few minutes to learn to correlate and interpret the info you get from the combination of directional arrows, bogey counter, signal strength meter, and signal type, you can spend a LOT more time hauling butt and a lot less time slowing down JUST IN CASE that little 'beep' happens to be a cop somewhere in your general vacinity.
