So I took out my wooden console the other day...
So with all the hot weather, and blazing sun this summer, I was looking at my wood, and I could notice it faded somewhat since when I first got it over a year ago (by looking at old pics) that and to the addition of some scratches that accumulated over time. So I couldn’t handle it anymore. I took out the wood in my console a couple of days ago, along with the shifter plastic, and gear shifter inside for some buffing. It was easy to take out, because it just snaps out, no screws, or anything to mess with.
I used 3M's scratch remover. Worked wonders, especially on the shifter bezel, they both looks shiner and newer. I also unscrewed the VSC button and the ashtray for better buffing action due to the angles associated, and so it would all be evened out.
This was also a good opportunity to clean out the cup holders from all liquids (soda) spilled that were slowing down the mechanism.
I was especially concerned about the wood to be scratch free because I installed 2 Amber LED mood lights a month ago, like the ones on the LS430, and newer BMW’s (best mod ever) and now it glows nice and shiny at night.
This project took about an hour, but it was well worth it considering the results. Wish I took some before and after, but I don’t have the best camera in the world.

For those who asked me about the mod light pics, sorry... I couldn’t get a good shot with my regular camera. So here is a pic from my phone camera in Night mode... so the pics are somewhat exaggerating the light output.
These were taken BEFORE the buffing procedure was done.
Again, I didn’t modify my Stereo lighting, this was a results of exaggerated lighting from the camera phone. Took on in normal mode, and it came out WAY too dark for anything to be seen.

Hey Moe, where did you tap the LEDs into? I'm planning on going with a UV light color (purple).
For a first gen, but the process should be very similar to a 2nd gen.

Real reason was to have more LED's, and one in the back to light up the rest of the console, and wooden strip on my 98. But I actually am glad I did it that way because i needed to sources of LED's to offset eachother so the mirror doesnt dim when its not necessary.
Also, the one connected via sunroof (behind the rearview mirror) blinks very fast after 1 minute of closing all doors, and shuting off the car. Works perfect like an alarm light. Also turns on when I unlock the door with my remote. ( I didnt mean for it to run this way, it just happend to be like that.)
I can take pics if you would like B.
