Question Does not go into gear when hiting the brake?

ok heres the problem. when i press the brakes it usually lets me press the button on the gearshifter and put it in gear but all of a sudden my brake lights dont work. And it doesnt let me put it in gear?? soo i have too use shiftlock. does any one know what it is the problem or what can i do or any kind of suggestion?? please im new so if im like in a wrong forum please tell me.. thanks for any help
p.s - can it be that the brake lights are out? i see the little light on the dash that says the brake lights are out? i really dont think that has any thing to do with putting it in gear?

I am confused with the brake light issue.
Have you visually seen at the rear of the car that the brake lights do not come on when pressing on the brake pedal?
Or
Are you guessing the brake lights do not work because a light on your dash comes on?

The combination of the brake light and shifting into gear not working means its an electrical issue. Check your kick panel fuses.

There are fuses in the kick panel by your feet and in the engine bay well at least for the '95 and up. Underneath the fuse panel cover lists what each fuse pertains to.
